It’s that time of year again when Coachella fever hits and fashionistas across the globe let their hair down – actually make that up into a shell embellished up-do or slicked back with neon pink glitter. Basically it’s the season when your clients dare to experiment and you need to be ready with the ideas, accessories and colors to make it happen. Forget the flower crowns of years gone by, for 2019 it’s all about standing out from the crowd.
We caught up with ghd stylists Samantha Cusick and Patrick Wilson fresh from Coachella to give us the low-down on the hottest styles filtering over from the West Coast.
Hair chains and embellishments
Whether adorned and plaited into a braid or added throughout the hair to jazz up a pony, hair chains were rife at Coachella 2019. Inspired by Balmain and Christina Siriano AW19 fashion week shows, the looks stood out from the Chella crowd.
Stylist Samantha Cusick was at Coachella on behalf of ghd this year and insists that for 2019 festival hair is all about embracing the natural texture of each girl’s hair. Creating looks for the likes of Lucy and Lydia Connell and Ashley Tisdale, Samantha says she maintained movement in the hair using the ghd festival collection and added adornments like beads, chains and rings as the finishing touch.
In homage to Ariana Grande, hair rings were a huge trend at Coachella with a variety of styles adorned with metallic rings. Whether delicate and intricate rings woven into braids, or added along partings or worked into the centre piece of a style to grab attention, there was no missing them.
Waves for days
Samantha also reports seeing a lot of effortless, loose waves at Coachella this year. “Soft waves that fell around the face and over the shoulders for a carefree and effortless appearance dominated the crowds,” insists Samantha. For 2019, encourage clients to break the mould and forget about pristine perfection – let effortless styling be their staple. It’s all about hair they can shake out and muss up to create a desired look.
For Patrick Wilson, this festival season is set to be a super colorful one. With pastels a dominating palette, along with neon wigs and rainbow braids, it appears anything goes as long as it’s bright. Our Colour World UK event in May provides the perfect opportunity to check out the hottest shades and pick up some new techniques. But be quick, tickets are selling out fast!
“Adding colour to your client’s hair look is a simple but really great way to mix up your look over the festival season,” says Patrick. “Whether adding coloured hair extensions, braiding ribbon or thread into the hair or using chalk spray as a quick fix, colour is a super cute way to festival-lise your look. Key colour hues spotted across the festival included a mix of shocking blue and voodoo blue, ultra violet, neon green and hot pink.”
Festival top tip
When using KELA chains, Samantha says to make sure you style the hair before adding the accessories. “I recommend creating loose waves with the platinum+ styler and then dressing the hair with accessories once the waves have cooled and set,” she says.
Enjoy the festival frenzy!
