EP38 – New ways of working with Carolyn Newman & Lacey Hunter-Felton

Aurore Caboche Podcast, The Blog

Presenters Nicky Pope and Lauren Stone at Respectfully invite independent educator and colourist Carolyn Newman and Lacey Hunter-Felton, owner of the Hunter Collective workspace, to talk about new ways of working in hairdressing for 2020. This might be a portfolio career blending education, session work and caring for clients, maybe balancing with family life and travel.

On the panel…

Carolyn Newman has more than 30 years’ experience in hairdressing and decided to leave salon based working some years ago, and now is a member of the Hunter Collective in central London. HC is one of the first companies to give a dedicated, focussed respect to a freelancer and allow them to celebrate choosing that path. This is a co-working space where independent businesses, i.e. the freelancers, come to build their brand within the HC ‘hair home’. Lacey Hunter-Felton is herself a hairdresser by profession but opening HC three years ago gave the opportunity take a new direction in her career and grow a community of freelancers.

We talked about…

In modern hairdressing for the 21st Century, the concept of freelance work has evolved. It used to mean a home-hairdresser or someone who worked away from a salon, but things have changed dramatically. Today, freelancing is a freedom to create a lifestyle a work/life balance to suit. But can it suit everyone? And how will perceptions change in the light of the Corona Virus challenge.

The conversation between Nicky, Lauren, Carolyn and Lacey includes references to how salons and freelancers can use technology to protect your clientele during the Lockdown and beyond. Vitally we must recognise the importance of using digital communications and marketing. Speak your truth and safeguard your integrity, is the key message.
