Hair by Steve Hurley

We love catching up with stylists to find out about the inspiration behind their creative visions. This week, we’re super excited to share our chat with Steve Hurley, above right. Winner of the TrendVision Male Grooming Award, Steve is also Wella’s UK stylist of 2017. Plus, he is art director of his own TONI&GUY franchise in Redditch. We’re in awe of you Steve! Find out what he has to say on hair, fashion and the future of hairdressing…

How does fashion and hair link together?
Both create the perfect balance of harmony through shape, strength, style and texture.

What have you learnt from combining hair and fashion?
I learnt how simplicity can make all the difference as well as visualising hair and working alongside a finished look seamlessly.

Which fashion icons inspire you?
I love Vivienne Westwood’s no-boundaries approach and passion to make fashion different, like her punk era vision with Johnny Rotten.  She breaks all the rules and inspires me to always break the boundaries with hair and never stop wanting to stand out and be different.

How was being backstage at the Preen By Thornton Bregazzi AW18 Show with Eugene Souleiman?
The experience was a true inspiration on how to combine hair and fashion. I loved seeing all the like-minded creative individuals working alongside each other to create one holistic vision.

What’s the best hair you’ve seen backstage?
The coolest hair I’ve ever seen was at the Typical Freak AW16 show. The looks had true elements of modern day punk and diversity!

Which summer hair trends have caught your eye?
I love very short, strong and textured looks. They provide androgynous silhouettes and give a gender neutral look.

How do you think fashion and hair will evolve in the future?
I can see fashion and hair breaking all possible boundaries between males and females. I see collaboration between these two industries bringing an absolute freedom of expression and forgetting all the stereotypes.

Can’t wait to see what else the hair genius comes up with in the future, but in the meantime check out some of his work below:
