Brr, it’s getting real cold out there, yet while you might be inclined to retreat under your duvet, you need to get up and out – you’re clients need you to fix their winter hair woes.

Not only is the party season fast approaching, but the cold snap also brings an opportunity to educate clients on caring for their hair and maximising on product sales, gift sets and treatments to keep tresses in tip-top shape.

Hair care

One stylist who’s concerned for the welfare of winter hair is Robert Eaton, Creative Director at Russell Eaton Salons and Wella Professionals UK and Ireland Technical Director.

Building trust with his clients, Robert and his team go beyond just recommending products to rescue already damaged hair. “Its important to guide clients on how they can help reduce the impact of winter on their hair between appointments,”  insists Robert. “From showing them the correct blow-drying techniques and the right temperature for styling their hair to other bespoke tips for their hair type.”

Most consumers are well versed on using a heat protector in the summer months, but as the winter draws in and issues like hat hair arise, they tend to use heat tools more. So perhaps this could be a topic you can discuss with your client. Also, why not explain the benefits of a hydration mask such as INVIGO Nutri-Rich Mask and encourage them to use one between appointments.

“At Russell Eaton, as a follow up from a client’s consultation and appointment, we like to ensure they have a hair program in place that is bespoke to them,” says Robert. “Their stylist will recommend specific products that will be tailored to their hair, needs and goals. With this service we can show them the right products to choose from our retail offering to give them the results they most desire.”

Clayde Baumann, Global Colour Director at D&J Ambrose and Wella Professionals Colour Creative member, agrees that the consultation process is key to generating revenue. While hair care and colour is important, Clayde suggests targeting your extension clients too.

He explains: “We ask customers if we can maintain their extensions and hair pieces – there’s a massive market with those girls who wear extensions or semi-permanent weaves and hair pieces in their hair over the weekend – so if we can get those hair pieces into the salon for treatments or for colour it’s an excellent way to generate extra revenue.  Most of all you have to let your clients know that you do have services like that available to them.”

Colour care

When it comes to your colour clients, Wella Professionals Colour Creative member and all round colour genius, Jayson Gray, says now is the time to really promote your glossing services.

“By adding deeper tones through glossing services you will add a touch of colour to the hair, thus providing a good ‘winter coat’ for the hair, ensuring survival through the season,” says Jason, founder of digital platform, Karbon Kyd.

And here’s Jayson’s top tip: “I always offer a hot towel wrap with my post-colour services, especially around the colder times of the year.  I also use System Professional in conjunction with the wrap to give another layer of security to the hair.”
