Miami Swim Week catch up with Emma Hunt

Emma Hunt – salon manager at Glow in Essex has just got back from Miami with the Unite team. After completing Unite’s first UK Runway Ready course in January, Emma had the opportunity to work with the Unite team at London Fashion Week (just weeks after completion) and more recently Miami Swim Week. We’ve caught up with her to find out how the experience was and how it benefitted her salon.

Emma Hunt

Emma’s career in hairdressing was inspired by her mum, as she grew up watching her working on clients in the kitchen. When finishing school she knew this was the career path for her, but struggled to get an apprenticeship. Emma the headed to college to complete her hairdressing training and went on to get a job with large American salon chain – Regis. During this time Emma completed a training course at Vidal Sassoon and later went on to working self-employed within a few salons. Unfortunately, lockdown saw the closure of the salon Emma was based in, but it wasn’t long before she landed the position as salon manager at Glow in Essex.

What do you love most about working at Glow?

We’re a small team which is nice and we get on well. I like to help the new girls achieve their goals. It’s something I wish I had when I started in the industry. There’s so many career paths and it’s hard to know how to reach them.

Why do you like working with the Unite brand?

I love the brand, the products are the best I’ve ever used. I originally started using it because I do a lot of hair extensions and all the products extension friendly. The 7Seconds Glossing Spray really impressed me which is why I then wanted to try more Unite products.

What did you learn at Unite’s Runway Ready course?

I learnt how to re-work as a team. It’s different kind of teamwork to the salon. I also learnt the importance of sharing each others strengths and weaknesses and working with that. Where there’s an area that I lack in, someone on the team will be stronger at it. I also learnt lots of styling tricks, how to use products differently and how to get a foot in the door of the session world.

A few weeks later you were at London Fashion Week with Unite, how was that?

It was amazing! There was a real buzz. It was exciting and I had lots of fun.

You also joined the team at Miami Swim Week, how did you find that?

Miami was very different to London. There were 9 designers this time, and a LOT of models. They’d do one catwalk and be straight back for the next. There was a lot going on for a good few hours at a time. I only worked on one show in London, but in Miami I was working three-four shows a day.

You have assisted Unite ambassador Narad Kutowaroo on shoots recently, how did that come about?

I first met Narad on the Runway Ready course, then again as he the lead hair stylist at London Fashion Week. Since then he’s given me a call from time-to-time when he’s looking for an assistant which has been great.

How do you think Runway Ready has benefitted both you as an individual and the salon?

It’s benefitted me in a different way, I’ve personally gained a lot from the course. As for the salon, we’re a town full of hair salons, and none have done anything like this so it certainly has given us an edge.

Why did you choose Miami Swim Week?

Who wouldn’t want to go to Miami for work? It was a massive opportunity, possibly once in a lifetime. I would love to do them all eventually, but I’m thrilled that I’ve had this chance.

Is there a difference in your most-used Unite product in the salon to session work?

Absolutely! I use 7Seconds Detangler on everybody in the salon, yet I rarely use it in session. When it comes to session styling I’d say my most-used products are  Le Play, Texturiza and the hairsprays. I’ve also learnt how to use products differently – In the salon I use Expanda for volume but on runway I’d use for sleek finish and wet look.
