BTS with Mary Cinque

Mary Cinque who runs Studio 5 – a home-based salon in Windsor shares all the ins and out of working with the Unite hair team at Fashion Week’s across the globe. Mary started hairdressing at the young age of 13! Her uncle had a salon and  se spent most of her time in there. Studio 5 first opened its door 10 years again Windsor town centre, the shortly before Covid Mary chose to open her home salon, so she could be more freelance, and start to open more doors in her career.

What are the most popular services at Studio 5?

Most of my clients are after a lightening service, so either balayage or highlights.

You took part in the UK’s first Runway Ready course, how was it?

It was a really interesting couple of days. It was fascinating to to see such a different side of hairdressing. Plus I made some great friends during the two days.

How soon after course were you offered a place on the Fashion Week hair team?

Literally straight away. London Fashion Week was four weeks later so there was no time to spare.

What shows did you work on?

I worked on all three of the Unite shows – Edward Crutchley, Oh Polly, Ingrid Kraftchenko. The hair was very different for each show which made it even more interesting. For Edward Crutchley we mainly created wet look styles. Oh Polly was slick back ponytails and waves. And, Ingrid Kraftchecnko was a cyber funk vibe – very out there but great fun to style – we used a lot of hair extensions to create those looks.

What was it like working behind the scenes?

Very different from salon life. Even longer hours and you just have to keep going on and on – but it was really good fun and I loved it!

You then joined the team for Miami Swim Week, how was that?

Again, very different from the salon. It was an amazing experience and I got to know people from all over the world. We created so many different hair styles and used a lot of hot tools to create beach waves.

Why Miami?

It was something different and allowed me to expand my contacts whilst trying new things.

What have you enjoyed most from working at Fashion Weeks?

Getting out of the salon and new experiences. It’s easy to get stuck in your salon ways and you don’t always realise that there are other ways of doing things. Connecting with different people has been great.

Miami was very different to London. The models got more involved in what you were doing and if they like how you styled their hair they would come back to you. I found that London was more of a conveyor belt, and you just had to get the job done.

You also took part in the second Runway Ready course in August. What made you do it again?

I enjoyed learning from Gary, he makes everything look so easy. Wig wrapping and creating avant-garde looks were my favourite aspect this time. I loved Fashion Week so much and wanted to give myself the chance to join the team for Paris Fashion Week in September. I also hope I can get to Milan and New York next year (fingers crossed).

How have you benefitted?

The skills I’m learning I can apply to the occasion ad wedding hair I do. It’s also nice to let my clients know what I’ve been doing, By letting them know I’m working on improving my skills still, they can put even more trust in me.

What are your favourite Unite products?

Le Play is a nice hairspray that you can re-mould the hair with, Session Max for tight ponytails, and Expanda powder for volume and texture.
