Shorter styles are having a moment in 2024, and for those with textured hair, the Teeny Weeny Afro, or TWA, is the go-to crop. The TWA is not only low maintenance but also a sign of a shift towards clients embracing their natural hair and texture. Avlon educator Pashcan’el Mitchell explains why the TWA is on the rise and how to care for and maintain this super cute style.
“The TWA is a very short, cropped afro hairstyle for those with naturally curly or coily hair. I find that clients will often opt for this style when they want a big chop, to kick-start their natural hair journey.
Caring for a TWA
In terms of styling, you can define curls easily and enhance clients’ natural texture using a curl-defining cream or gel. Finger coils or twist-outs are great methods to create a more defined, structured look. I also love half corn rows, and Bantu knots to change up the look of a TWA. For clients who prefer a more edgy look, a fade or undercut adds a modern twist to the traditional afro and can be customised with designs or patterns. I will always advise clients to keep their hair moisturised by layering their products for a nourished and healthy TWA.
It’s no surprise that the TWA is gaining popularity. I think there’s been a real shift toward embracing natural textures lately. The TWA represents self-acceptance and is quite liberating for curly and coily-haired clients. I do believe the Afro, in all its forms, helps people connect with their heritage, culture, and individuality. The low-maintenance TWA appeals to those who want to embrace their natural curl but don’t want to spend lots of time detangling, styling, and washing.
