The OG Pro Beauty Brand: 45 Years of Paul Mitchell

The OG pro beauty startup. 45 years of heart, heritage and innovation.

Paul Mitchell helped shape the modern professional salon industry. Through groundbreaking education programmes, pioneering cruelty-free commitments, and an unwavering belief that the
stylist comes first, Paul Mitchell has been in the palm of the hairdresser’s hand for over four decades. The brand was founded in 1980 by hairstylist Paul Mitchell and entrepreneur John Paul DeJoria two people with $700 between them and a vision to support the success of salon professionals. That vision hasn’t changed. What started with three products sold door-to-door has
grown into the one of the biggest professional hair styling brands in the world.

Here’s what makes this brand unlike any other:

They were first.

Paul Mitchell was the first professional beauty brand to publicly oppose animal testing in 1980, when the rest of the industry wasn’t even having the conversation. That cruelty-free commitment
has held firm for over four decades and remains embedded in every product developed today.

They grow their own.

The brand’s hero ingredient, awapuhi ginger, has been at the heart of Paul Mitchell since day one. It’s grown on the off-grid, solar-powered Paul Mitchell Awapuhi Farm in Hawaii, where the same
family has tended the plants for over 40 years. Each root is hand-washed, solar-dried and ground into concentrated powder. This isn’t a supply chain story it’s a legacy.

They started a revolution in black and white.

The iconic Paul Mitchell packaging was originally monochrome because colour printing was too expensive. Co-founder John Paul DeJoria was selling into salons from his car. Today, the brand is
evolving its packaging with the same spirit rooted in sustainability, designed for the modern salon.

They built an empire from $700.

What began as a startup grew into a multi-billion-dollar professional beauty company encompassing Tea Tree, Awapuhi Wild Ginger, MITCH, Clean Beauty, Neuro Tools and more. Every type. Every texture. Every style.

They’re still family.

Paul Mitchell passed away within a decade of the brand’s founding, but John Paul DeJoria remains the majority shareholder. His daughter, Michaeline DeJoria, now steers the company as CEO,
alongside President Jason Yates a hairdresser first, a leader second. In 2007, John Paul DeJoria signed a 360-year trust ensuring Paul Mitchell remains a family-operated, independent pro beauty
company that stays true to its original promises.

They’re just getting started.

Led by a dynamic female CEO and hairdresser president, Paul Mitchell is in its restage era honouring heritage while evolving to reflect the needs of today’s salon pros and their guests. Same
great performance, fresh new look. The next 45 years start now.

Paul Mitchell is exclusively distributed in the UK and Ireland by Sweet Squared.
