At the end of the first quarter in 2023 Unite Hair asked some of the #unitefamily about salon trends. Are clients becoming more experimental? What are their hair goals? There is definitely an emerging trend of clients getting more and more experimental….where will this lead? Read on to find out.
Four industry experts on salon trends
Melissa Timperley (Owner & Educator, Melissa Timperley Salons)
“Clients are definitely becoming more experimental, long hair is out and I’m so happy about it. I am so excited about our new MT Masterclasses in precision cutting, everyone is asking to learn a new & unique cut – the ‘Boyfriend bob’ is our most asked for haircut. When it comes to colour, we’re seeing blondes with a hint of gold to keep them super bright, no more drab ashy grey. Brunettes are going lighter too but keeping the darker root. Think sun-kissed and expensive chocolate brunette.” Melissa Timperley
Brendan O’Sullivan (International Session Stylist & owner of Brendan O’Sullivan Hair and Beauty)
“Our clients feel more experimental in 2023 and this is championed by the investment we make in team training and development. Good consultation is key; when the team feels confident to identify a need and make new recommendations to update or evolve a look, the client is likely to go for it. We always consider the long-term goal for our clients, discussing their desires, main events and goals for the year ahead. Our team really enjoys creative colouring. We’ve had focused training over the past year and the results are amazing.”
“We’ve sent team members to each Unite Runway Ready course recently which makes them really confident with styling, and means they get experience working with me at London Fashion Week and feel in touch with the latest trends. In turn, this is helping our customers become more experimental.” Brendan O’Sullivan
Robert Bell (Owner, Robert Bell Salon)
“I feel we are verging on a hair cutting revolution again, a bit like the 60’s. The last 15 years have been a little bland with beach waves and uncut hair. We are noticing clients definitely want something different. Even if it means layering long hair more. Perms are on the brink of being the next thing. I’m feeling some training sessions coming on for my team, especially the younger ones. Everything in fashion goes around and comes around with some good referencing of course.” Robert Bell
Mary Cinque (Owner, Studio 5)
“Yes, I’m finding more people are having creative haircuts rather than just one-length – layers seem to be trending. Blonde trends are changing, many of my clients are now asking for honey tones, browns and reds rather than ash blonde.” Mary Cinque
Isabel Homer (Hair Stylist, Luxe Hair Professionals)
“Fringes, bangs! I think the Netflix series ‘Wednesday’ has definitely brought the fringe back into style. We are seeing a lot of colour changes, from balayage to all over dark. Or instead of clients having packed-in foils, they’re opting for balayage as it’s lower maintenance.” Isabel Homer
