Safy B joins the Unite family

Safy B

Welcoming Safy Burton to this week’s Unite conversation… Safy has been busy building her award-winning salon ‘Safy B salon’ in Buckinghamshire, as well as growing her social media presence through posting her hair content… Safy has recently started using the Unite products and we’re very excited to hear how she’s getting on.

We would love to hear more about your salon…

Okay, our salon has been open for six and a half years now, and we are predominantly known for our colour and creativity. We didn’t set out to be a colour salon but over the years I’ve become more known for my colour which has followed in the salon.

Have you always been interested in colour?

Well, a little thing not many people will know about me is that I never initially looked to be a colour salon, it actually used to be one of my worst areas… I couldn’t colour to save my life! Moving to Buckinghamshire from the North meant I was able to throw myself into colour. I’ve always been quite good at throwing myself into tasks and essentially being forced to learn and work hard. Again, this filters into the salon where I am quite strict with how we run things, especially our consultations. We predominantly use vivids as a salon but we also enjoy natural colours. However, we always ensure our colours are to a high standard.

What have you been doing to grow your social media?

Something I’ve noticed that helps make colours pop on social media is the placement of images. If you have all blondes next to each other it just looks like a bland meal but intertwining beautiful blondes amongst those bright vivid colours helps make colours pop. We want to show our colourings, they’re all beautiful so let’s make them stand out!

You’ve mentioned you’re based in Alyesbury, what are your clients like?

We have a big mix of clients. Our salon has a big ‘no judgement’ policy. We have some clients coming in wearing their comfy clothes, and others in smarter clothing. We’re a space where anyone can fit in. We have a great mix! As a general rule, we try to have our younger colourists performing on younger clients as they understand one another better and vice versa.

How many people have you got working with you?

There are 5 of us in the salon. We have a newer team post-lockdown. Unfortunately, we were hit quite hard – like many other salons – by people choosing to go self-employed but I’ve really found the positive side as we’ve been able to rebuild our team. We came out of lockdown with a fresh face, and I love having a small team where we can gel.

2022 has been a very successful year for yourself and the salon. Talk us through what you’ve been up to?

It’s been a very busy year, I didn’t realise how much I had actually done until I wrote it all down! I have really got into photo shoots this year, kicking the year off with my first-ever avant-garde shoot and then another colour shoot. In May I joined the Respect and Colour World team at Colour World 2022, representing myself on a colour shair chair presenting some of my holographic colour work. This was a real highlight! After that, we won the ultimate salon at the Salon Business Awards, which was amazing! It was incredible to have everyone’s achievements in the salon recognised… Whenever we apply for awards we usually go for colour awards as this is what our salon focuses on, so it was amazing to be recognised for the ultimate salon. To finish the year I was at Salon International with Sophie, one of the girls on my team. A very busy year for myself and the team, haha!

Where do you usually find your fashion inspiration?

I’ve never really delved into fashion that deeply, this is why I’ve booked myself onto the Unite course. It’s always been an area where my friends do it. Our salon is amazing at colour and we can definitely do an incredible job styling to salon level but we haven’t done it to a runway quality. I would love to delve into this different area of the industry.

When you heard about the Runway Ready course, what was the main component that appealed to you?

A main interest of mine is learning to style hair differently. We place a lot of emphasis on our colour work in the salon but I think there is value in learning how to style to a higher level. Not only making it more effective but also learning how to do this quicker, as we are always tight for time in salons. We want to create a successful look and make it pop.

What interests you about working at a fashion week?

Sophie and myself will be working with Unite at London Fashion Week and we are both so excited. There is always such an incredible buzz around these events. Another reason I’m pretty excited is that I enjoy working under pressure. I know Sophie has never worked under pressure much so we’ll see how it goes for her. I’m sure she’ll do well! It could be our thing… We’re excited to bring the knowledge we learn back to the salon. We’ve already started telling clients about it… I think it’s worth letting them know as it broadens our skillset and service menu, we can have more on offer for clients. We want to encourage our clients to come and have styling done. Currently, we do basic styling, wedding hair etc. but not full on glam hair. So it’s going to be fun to learn new skills!

You recently introduced Unite to your salon, what influenced your choice?

The last thing I wanted to do was use products I didn’t know, so I gradually started introducing these products into our salon, testing them out and getting our clients to review what they’re like. I can tell you, they are absolutely loving them! Personally, I’ve played around with them a lot and just fallen in love with the products. By doing these Unite courses we are excited to learn more about the products and how to step further into a new realm and improve ourselves.

Finally, we would love to hear what your favourite products are?
  • Lazer straight
  • Liquid volume
  • Dust
  • UOil

These are our favourites and our clients! It really helps us achieve the sharp looks that our clients are looking for at the moment. We can’t wait to explore these products more!
