Post-holiday scalp care

Summer holidays are over, it’s time to offer you clients some scalp TLC. When hair is exposed to high heat, seawater, and chlorine in sunny climates, just like the skin on the rest of our body, the scalp can really suffer. Avlon’s European Education Director, Jacqui McIntosh shares her top tips to revive and nourish dry scalps.

Cleanse and Care

Regular deep conditioning is required to keep the hair and scalp hydrated, cuticles re-aligned, and breakage reduced. Before styling, apply a moisturising leave-in conditioner or hair oil to provide added hydration and protection, which will help retain moisture in the hair shaft.

A sulfate-free shampoo for cleansing is important for optimum scalp care. A co-washing in between shampoo regimes will help to minimise dryness and maintain moisture of the scalp if using a high pH shampoo. Detangle hair carefully using a wide-toothed comb or your fingers. Start from the ends and work your way up, removing knots and tangles without pulling on the root. Massaging your scalp regularly improves blood circulation and promotes a healthy scalp.

Styling

Be careful not to put too much stress on your hairline too often. Avoid traction and tension and give your hair a break from tight ponytails and slick buns. Instead opt for hairstyles that minimise tension on the hairline and scalp, such as loose braids, twists, or protective updos. Keep edges and exposed scalp moisturised with gels and oils.

If wearing weaves or extensions, ensure they are properly installed and not too tight. Avoid leaving them in for extended periods to prevent hair breakage and damage to the natural hair. Keeping your scalp moisturised whilst wearing your weave is important; using a light oil that absorbs easily without leaving a heavy, greasy build-up.

Nutrition

Consume a well-rounded diet that includes fruits, vegetables, lean proteins, and healthy fats. These nutrients support overall hair and scalp health. Drink an adequate amount of water daily to keep your body and hair hydrated. Implement stress-reducing activities like exercise, meditation, or hobbies to minimise stress levels, as high stress can contribute to hair loss.
