Menopause Hair Tips

The M word can be a taboo topic when it comes to talking to clients in the salon. Often focus is placed on how the Menopause effects mood, energy levels and sleep, but what about the physical effects it can have on their hair? We caught up with Fudge Professional Global Ambassador Jonathan Andrew to get some Menopause Hair Tips.

Jonathan Andrew

Hair health

“There are numerous challenges for hair during the menopause, but I would say the main one is that hair can lose its volume and can become finer, which for a lot of women this can be frustrating,” explains Jonathan. “Hair can damage easier too, as oestrogen levels decrease, which is a big factor in hair growth and health – so it might not get past a certain length, or it feels more brittle, and you see more shed in the shower and on your clothes.  To combat this, it’s good to encourage your clients to eat omega rich foods like eggs, avocado, seeds/nuts and fish, leafy greens – even add a collagen supplement/powder into your daily drinks.”

Jonathan suggests that during menopause, your clients may also want to rethink their hair style and usual haircut. He adds: “It’s the perfect time to take stock of the condition and avoid it feeling lacklustre, dry, lank etc. Ensuring regular trims to keep the hair looking thicker will help. Layers for thicker hair are ideal and blunt cuts for finer hair textures.”

Time to educate

It’s important to take time to educate your clients in the consultation for their cut and styling at home, insists Jonathan.Your client’s hair may need a new style and look; different doesn’t always mean short, but it means you can experiment with something new to make styling and the look become easier for you. This is a great time for people to understand the benefits of products and the different types that are available from shampoo and conditioner like Fudge Professional Damage Rewind to correct any damage from colouring and styling to volume and thickening products like Fudge Professional XXL Hair Thickener and Fudge Professional XPander Foam, which are both great options.

“Also, educate your clients on the right ingredients they should be looking for in a product. Minoxidil helps stimulate the follicle, so is good if you’re client is experiencing hair loss during the menopause. Products like our Fudge Professional Clean Mint, can be great too as it helps cleanse and nourish the scalp, which will in turn give the follicles the best chance to produce healthy hair.”
