Five hacks to being a more sustainable hairdresser

Leaf Scissors are a brand dedicated to making the hair industry and beyond more sustainable. Therefore, they are providing you with some ‘easy to apply’ tips to help make your business more eco-conscious whether you are in a salon or freelance.

Buy/Associate with sustainably chosen brands that are thinking about the planet, are cruelty-free and Vegan

There’s no doubt that the demand for eco-friendly / sustainable products has risen in the last few years, you can help contribute to this by showing support and giving your business to such brands/companies. Examples include oway, dizziak, davines and of course Leaf. Remember every purchase is a vote for a more sustainable future.

The three R’s – Reduce, reuse and recycle

We are seeing more and more companies popping up who offer a service to help you manage your salon waste. Companies such as Green Salon Collective and Handle can take your waste and recycle them into different tools or products, they can even recycle hair and excess colour which would otherwise be poured away.

Be conscious with your electrics and running taps

Water wastage is a huge issue for modern businesses, especially in salons. Therefore, we suggest that every stylist makes a pledge to cut their hair washing time by a single minute per client, it may seem small, but this will make a huge difference in the grand scheme of things. Also, invest in products such as EcoHeads which can cut your water consumption by a huge 65% and removes harmful chemicals from your water.

A greener route to work

We completely understand that freelance stylists are limited by their mode of transportation but for salon stylists we suggest making an effort to investigate a greener mode of transport. For example, public transportation such as a train can cut your personal carbon emissions by 75% in comparison to driving to work every day.
