Kick off 2024 with Runway Ready

Unite’s Runway Ready was back again on 2nd-3rd January – is there really a better way to start the year, than by working towards your career goals?

We were invited down to Lacey’s Distribution to see aspiring session stylists in action. The two-day bootcamp was led by Unite’s creative director Gary Baker and Unite ambassador Narad Kutowaroo. Gary made no secret of the immense pressure that is put on hair stylists when working backstage and the extremely tight time scales. If you think Session Styling is for you, then Runway Ready will really put you to the test.

Gary and Narad also shared stories on their experiences and told the group what to expect when working at shows and how to behave – fan-girling over Winnie Harlow being a big unprofessional no-no.

The products

We saw Gary show students how to use Unite’s products in ways they’re not known to be used across a variety of looks. From applying Elevate mousse to dry hair to blowdrying Session Max hairspray for a firm sleek look. We love to see the versatility.

Narad told students not to be shy when it came to product application and that despite your initial instincts, you’re not likely to be applying too much product. Session styling differs from salon styling. “To achieve the looks the hair will look healthy, but it certainly won’t feel it with all the product used;” Gary says.

Students also explored the results of different curling irons against different size sections. “We don’t set the hair to achieve the curliest hair, we’re changing the fabric of the hair.”

The Runway Ready students

We went around the room to speak to students about their Runway Ready experience. Whilst every single one enjoyed it, some were surprised on how challenging it was (in a positive way of course). Check out what they had to say below…

Upon completion the students are invited to join the Unite hair team for AW24 Fashion Week next month. We can’t wait to hear all about it.
