Best of British

Nicky Pope Henkel, The Blog

We are still buzzing from watching Nick Irwin’s opening show at the British Hairdressing Awards for Schwarzkopf Professional! A statement of inclusivity, and delivering editorial hair with the wow! factor, as Schwarzkopf global styling ambassador Nick sent a posse of Black models on stage. This is hair to celebrate the best of British.

Seated front row, the editors at Respect For Hair enjoyed the vibe as the room full of 1400 guests erupted into applause. Nick Irwin is a hero of the night. There is a lot of work to do in redressing the gaps in training and practising hairdressing on Black/Afro curly coily hair. Progress is being made, and it’s important to see big-hitting brands such as Schwarkzkopf Professional  (indeed all the Henkel labels) making such a strong statement of commitment to supporting Black hair issues.
Throughout the evening, in the collections portrayed for the finalists, and in the British Hairdresser of the Year nominees’ models there was a palpable shift with inclusivity a key theme. Bravo to all who worked with models from the LGBTQIA+ community, Black models, and older models, too. This year’s British Hairdressing Awards evening was altogether a positive representation. There’s more to do, but we’re on our way! See our favourite pictures from the finale shows here:

Let’s keep going in the right direction. Together.
