It’s been an incredible awards season for Malcolm Murphy, winning the Great Lengths Trophy of Excellence Award at the UK GL Awards 18/19, amongst other industry accolades this year. The Great Lengths Trophy is the most prestigious award to win at the GL Awards, seeking entries from stylists who demonstrated exceptional creativity, individuality, a loyal client base and strong reputation in the industry. We caught up with this hairdressing hero who started his career in the industry at the tender age of 16, to find out why he loves Great Lengths and what winning his award meant…
Why did you decide to train with Great Lengths?
The first salon I trained in didn’t offer hair extensions. I worked there for more than 15 years so never had the opportunity to develop that part of my career. Eight years ago, when my business partner Joe and I opened our salon, I knew that hair extensions was something that I wanted to offer in my business. I also knew that Great Lengths are the best extensions available so that was the brand I was going to use. We pride ourselves on offering the best and I wasn’t going to compromise on that.
Why did you decide to enter the GL Awards 18/19?
This was my third time entering the Great Lengths Trophy Award and I worked really hard with my clients to give myself the best chance possible to win. I started doing celebrity Lydia Bright’s hair extensions about six years ago and then through word of mouth and social media I managed to grow my profile to include more celebrity clients. This really helped to take my career to the next level and I wanted to demonstrate this process when creating my entry and hoped that it would make me stand out to the judges.
How did you feel when you won the Great Lengths Trophy of Excellence?
I really feel like winning the Great Lengths Trophy is the pinnacle of my career and that all of my hard work has paid off . The moment my name was called to announce me as the winner is a memory that will stay with me forever and I am sure it will open more doors for me.
Congratulations to Malcolm on a brilliant, and well-deserved win. You can read more about the GL Awards HERE:
