Meet GL Awards winner Hector Obeng

Lauren Great Lengths

Great Lengths HectorThinking outside the box, stylist Hector Obeng scooped the Creative Innovation trophy at the UK GL Awards 2018 for this unique beard extension. We were intrigued and figured an interview with Hector would make a pretty interesting read…

The man behind the image

  • How did you begin your hairdressing career?
Hairdressing started as a hobby and then became one of the three jobs I had to pay my way through university. I also had a pizza job and a cleaning job. Halfway through my course I realised how much I loved hairdressing, so I nervously told my dad and switched to full time hairdressing.
  • Who/What was your inspiration when creating your final winning look for the awards?
I’m a massive fan of Game of Thrones and while doing a shoot I came across one of the male models called Jeulz, who completely embodied a character from the show. I set to applying beard extensions as I felt it was an innovation that hadn’t been seen before.
  • What has been your favourite transformation to date?
Definitely winning Creative Innovation look for the UK GL Awards 2018/19
  • Great Lengths HectorWho are your favourite industry artists and why?
Madam C. J. Walker is my inspiration as she was a pioneer in hairdressing at a time that was so different and challenging. She truly was a trailblazer in the industry.
  • What has been the pinnacle of your hairdressing career so far?
My wife and I entered the National Sensation Black Hair Awards in 2013. I won the bridal hair category, while my wife won braids/extensions, which was an amazing achievement. Following this, I went on to win the Creative Innovation category at the UK GL Awards 2018/19 which was a dream come true, especially as I’d been a UK GL Awards finalist eight times before.
  • Can you tell us about any upcoming projects/exciting opportunities?
Next year I will be exploring further avenues to push the Hector product line. This includes hair products, unisex perfumes, toiletries and his-and-hers underwear. I also hope to be more involved creatively with Great Lengths following my recent award win.
