Color Zoom UK Gold Winner: Stephanie Jones

Natasha Goldwell

The Color Zoom global final is soon going to be upon us so we’re chatting to a few of the UK gold winners before they represent us on the world stage.
This week we caught up with Partner Colourist gold winner Stephanie Jones, above. She tells us who inspires her and why she thinks the 90’s hairstyles are about to make a big comeback…

Stephanie’s 2018 entry

How did you interpret the unique Elemental theme?
I made sure to do a lot of research on minerals – reading, studying pictures and creating mood boards.

What were the key techniques used in your look?
I used root shadowing, twisted razor cutting, twisted scissor cutting and finger drying.

How does it feel to be the gold winner in your category?
It feels amazing to be a gold winner in my category especially because of how incredible all the other finalists entries were, I still can’t believe it!
What are you most looking forward to in Toronto?
I’m really excited for the competition but also looking forward to seeing and speaking to lots of like minded hairdressers from all around the world and attending the seminars and hopefully a bit of sightseeing thrown in there too.

What advice would you give to anyone thinking to enter the next Color Zoom competition?
My best advice is: just do it. Before entering this year’s competition I asked myself what the point was. But, the experience taught me that you’ve just got to go for it and put yourself out there. There’s nothing to lose but so much to gain.

If you were on a desert island which one item from your kit would you bring?
I’d bring my roll of elastic which I would use to create and tie lots of different hairstyles with. Plus, I could use it for things like tying branches together to build a shelter or making a rod to catch fish with…stylish AND practical!

Who from the industry inspires you?
Errol Douglas. He’s achieved so much within the industry and his work is so inspirational. The quotes as well as the advice he gives on his social media are very thought provoking. I’ve never had the pleasure of meeting him but he seems like a very humble man.

What do you think is set to be the next big thing in hairdressing?
‘Glass hair’ seems to be the biggest hair trend at the moment, I’ve spotted celebrities rocking super sharp, super sleek and super shiny hair lately. It’s very 90’s so I wouldn’t call it a ‘new’ thing but it’s a trend none the less and I think we’ll be seeing a lot more of it in the near future.

What’s your go to hairstyle for yourself?
When I’m working in the salon I like my hair off my face so you’ll see me sporting some kind of side braid or a high pony whilst at work but when I go out, I like to wear my hair big and curly with as much volume as possible!

Which three tools/products can’t you live without?
Goldwell’s dual senses big finish hair spray, Kerasilk reconstruct blow dry spray and Goldwell’s rotating curling wand.
