The first conceptual collection devised and created by Tom Connell as hair art director at Davines is out and is titled Light. Time & Color. Tom describes the work as an integral part of his long-term cultural project ”Portraits of People” and it was just presented on the Davines YouTube channel.
Inspiration
InspirationThe collection is about the interpretation of each woman’s individuality, going beyond hairstyling and the pure creation of a look to get closer, with multiple references to the world of fashion, music, architecture and design. Each portrait of this collection contains references to socio-cultural, musical and artistic contexts that have influenced Tom Connell’s perception, making this collection difficult to inscribe within the simple context of hairdressing, but rather making it very close to a work of art.
«The collections for 2021 continue on the long-term cultural journey of bridging the gap between the hair industry, design, art and fashion, work which is innovative but with a transparent, authentic approach» says Tom.
To better achieve this goal Tom decide to move away from digital photography and shooting characterful people of the whole project on film in natural light without post editing to better enhance the reality and authenticity at the heart of the collection.

Colour: combining light and time
Colour: combining light and timeWorking in collaboration with Ashleigh Hodges – who put huge amounts of time into creating just the right colour requested – Tom put colour right at the heart of this collection leaving technique in the background. Each tone, although strong and original, is still sober and elegant. The meticulous development of the colour shades is harmonious and reveals details and contrasts that are sometimes delicate and other times clear.
Ocean pacific green
A specific shade of green, the most difficult colour to obtain, combined with a slightly golden sand tone. The influences are many: from punk to the 80s, taking up an iconic look by David Bowie. But the colour is a tribute to the Danish artist Olafur Elìasson.
First light
A shape that refers to Japanese architecture whose raw material is wood, in a warm beige tone. Every time you look at it a new detail emerges: the exaggerated bangs, a twisted knot, decisive undercut. A further influence comes from the world of fashion and from a famous headdress by Alexander McQueen.
Last light
The authentic tone of copper metal and the last lights of the day: vibrant. The shape refers to the 70s, to the ruffled hair of skaters, taken up by exaggerating the shapes. Short and heavy on the front, long on the shoulders.
Colorado topaz
A particular shade of topaz, which exists in nature only in Colorado and the translucent coat of the Akhal-Teke horses are the colour inspiration that accompanies this geometric and disjointed portrait that does not seem to belong to the same figure.
