Given the unique properties of curly and coily hair, it’s crucial to understand the implications of colour application. Drawing from her extensive experience, Avlon educator, Hannah Larden, shares her insights on how to create a vibrant, healthy, curly colour.
How can hair colour affect curly or coily hair?
Colouring can enhance the beauty and texture of curls and coils. Still, it is important to recognise that the hair’s natural structure is more susceptible to moisture loss after a colour service. That’s why I advocate for a good aftercare routine for clients at home and recommend that they keep up with treatments to promote overall hair health.

Is your client’s curly hair suitable for a colouring service?
It goes without saying, that a thorough consultation is needed prior to any colour service. With curly hair, it’s important to assess the current condition of the hair by testing the elasticity and porosity, as this will determine the overall condition of the hair, as well as how well the hair will retain colour.
How often can you lighten or colour textured hair?
The upkeep of colour on textured hair is really down to the client’s desired results. There are ways in which the application of colour can be tweaked with varying techniques to create a look that suits their lifestyle. Hair colour can be low or high maintenance, depending on the application. For example, balayage or baby lights are easy to maintain with no harsh regrowth. But a full head lightening or scalp colour needs lots of care, maintenance, and root touch-ups.
What should clients know about maintaining their curly hair health after colour?
Aftercare is very important to the upkeep of coloured hair, for any client. Some of my top tips for curly clients are to incorporate deep conditioning treatments to help restore hydration in your hair. To keep your hair well-moisturised, use the correct shampoo/conditioner/leave-in products that are tailored for your hair type. Minimise heat styling, but always prioritise using thermal protection products when you do. These products form a barrier between your hair and the heat, helping to reduce the risk of damage. Finally, visit your stylist for regular trims in between colour services.
