Boost customer morale with the #unitefamily

It’s time to boost customer morale in the salon! Four industry experts advise on how to achieve this.

Throughout the first quarter of 2023, we’ve heard a constant stream of doom and gloom in the media. Unite asked some of the #unitefamily how they were managing to boost customer morale and keep things positive.

How to boost customer morale with tips from experts:

Brendan O’Sullivan in action

Brendan O’Sullivan

Brendan O’Sullivan, International session stylist & owner of Brendan O’Sullivan Hair and Beauty, says: “Our first quarter has traded well and I think this positivity passes on to clients. The salon has grown with a foundation of great service and a vision to make every customer look and feel fantastic, this keeps us focused to always deliver a five-star customer experience. We feel customers should have an escape from the negativity in the media and pressures that accompany tough times. We don’t do discounts but do offer regular treats to our clients, it’s good to go above and beyond expectations to make service extra special.”

Brendan says: “We’ve kept our foot on the accelerator with education, kicking off the year with two team members on the Unite Runway Ready course; they were subsequently able to join the backstage team at London Fashion Week to support my shows. It’s a positive talking point and motivator for both team and clients.”

Isabel Homer, hair stylist with Luxe Hair Professionals, says: “We’ve put out promotions and incentives to get people coming in. Things like ‘prosecco Fridays & Saturdays’ keep it cheery. We also do ‘Recommend a Friend & Family Member’ – the new client receives 20% off and the person who recommended them also gets 20% off, and that’s gone down really well.”

Robert Bell

Robert Bell, owner, Robert Bell Salon, says: “Treating our customers as special people has never changed. The most important thing is first impressions. It all starts with the booking. So, in our case we have an App which can be loaded from the apps store. Clients can also book through our website robertbellsalon.co.uk. My favourite is the old-fashioned bespoke phone booking.

Regarding our work, we spend as long as it takes to make our clients happy. Clients come to forget all the nonsense that is going on in the world. Try not to remind them.”

Mary Cinque

Mary Cinque, owner of Studio 5 says: “I’ve always done loyalty cards, but this year have added a bit extra onto them, like treatments. As well as getting a money-off reward for loyalty, they can now get a complimentary treatment too. I’ve also introduced things like hairline tints which I never used to do before, so if someone can’t afford the full price, they can still come in and get their colour touched up. Also, just the little things like refreshments, tea & coffee, green tea, vegan milk so everyone can enjoy, it adds a bit of extra service. I now offer Birthday Vouchers; I send out a 10% off voucher for their birthday.”
