The One For Afro

The Big One Trophy is back for its third year and we are super excited for it. Over the years we have seen some exceptional work across the seven different categories; however this year we’re most excited about ‘The One for Afro‘ which is being sponsored by Avlon Europe.

The Big One made its debut back in 2019; when this category was known as the ‘The One for Texture’. There was a gorgeous awards ceremony on stage at the Tribu-te Show and Rick Roberts became the first hairdresser to take home the title, with this stunning piece of work…

After careful consideration a change of name was on the cards. The One for Texture was aimed at Afro hair; yet all hair has texture. Whether it be curly, coily, wavy or straight. In 2020 the category became known as The One for Afro, however that wasn’t the only change…

Due to Covid restrictions, the annual Tribu-te show was unable to take place; so a virtual awards ceremony was streamed live on Facebook. Each Finalist had the opportunity to be seen on screen when their category was being announced; with Anne Veck winning the One for Afro.

Why Avlon Sponsored The One for Afro

“We believe strongly in encouraging creativity and talent in hairdressing. We’ve sponsored The One For Afro category as we have a passion for supporting the development of the textured hair market and the individuals who contribute to it. We’re honoured to take this opportunity to shine a light on professionals within this industry,” says Acacia George, Marketing Manager for Avlon Europe.

Nicky Pope, Publisher for Tribu-te Magazine UK added  “The Big One trophy competition attracts entries from all across the industry – salon stylists to sessionistas. Of all our categories, The One for Afro is extremely important; we are championing hairdressing for people with Black/Afro-heritage hair and celebrating this hair type. For too long, many hairdressers have been perhaps a little afraid of working with very curly, coily hair but honestly they needn’t be. Products, techniques, accessories have progressed so much to make it easier to develop your skills and show them off in great imagery. We are delighted to have Avlon Europe with us as a sponsor for the Big One – and in particular we want to see The One For Afro grow in stature and visibility. And remember, the seven categories are then judged to find an overall winner. Could 2021 be the year The Big One is awarded for work on Black/Afro-heritage hair? Wouldn’t this be awesome!”
