Helping clients to keep their Afro hair fresh this summer

We love a hot Summer, but it’s not always great for our hair. Afro hair in particular needs lots of care and attention as the temperature rises. Jacqui McIntosh, European Education Director for Avlon, shares her top tips for keeping afro hair healthy in the heat.

She says: “For afro and excessively curly hair, type4 hair, we need to be particularly mindful of the effects of hot weather, including UV damage, dryness and humidity. Moisture is really important for afro hair all year round but is especially important in the summer season. In anticipation, make sure you help your client to prepare their hair for rising temperatures.”

Increase Moisture

Deep conditioning is key to keeping afro hair hydrated. Clients should look to boost the frequency of deep conditioning treatments, either at home or in the salon. Our KeraCare Intensive Restorative Masque is great for this. It’s specialised blend of fruit extracts work to seal, smooth and tighten cuticles for better moisture retention. Using the LOC method by layering products and oils is also a great way to lock moisture in.

Regular Regime

Encourage your clients to have a regular moisturising regime that includes night time haircare. Products such as, KeraCare Overnight Moisturising Treatment will ensure their hair is well moisturised and prepared for the hot weather by hydrating, softening and smoothing dry, rough, hard or brittle hair while your client sleeps.

Creative and Protective

Up dos are great for keeping moisture locked into hair. Instead of reaching for the blow-dryer or flat iron, show your clients how to create simple chignon, twists, banto knots or braided bun. For these styles KeraCare Edge Tamer works well to ensure that the hairlines lay flat but protected from tension.

Wrap it Up

Just like we cover up to protect our skin from UV rays, encourage clients to make use of silk or satin scarves, wrapped around their head to keep the strong summer sun of the hair and scalp. It’s also a quick and easy way to accessories their outfit while protecting their hair.
