We caught up with inspiring hairdresser and salon owner Maxine Foster to talk about her 40-year career in the hair industry, her can’t-live-without products both in-salon and at home and why Avlon is her top brand of choice for textured/afro hair.
What are your earliest memories of starting out in the hairdressing industry?
I remember receiving a single handout with information on textured/afro hair when I went to college during my apprenticeship and that was when I made a promise to myself. I would change that experience for other hairdressers-to-be and I went on to keep my promise. To this day, I still have that piece of paper.
What did you do after qualifying?
I became a stylist and went on to manage a salon. Then I served as a college lecturer for 25 years which is when I had the chance to make a difference. I was steadfast and passionate about passing on high standards of professionalism and skills in all hair types and textures.
What was it like opening your own salon?
Starting a business with zero clients took a leap of faith. I took that leap and held onto my integrity. You need to be confident that there is a market out there if you know your target audience. My service ability is diverse and bespoke for each individual client. Years later I find myself maintaining the same high standards in a thriving busy salon. Clients expect one-to-one service and can feel comfortable knowing their service time is for them alone.
Which products do you choose for textured/afro hair?
After many years of using products for textured and coily hair, I have been able to make comparisons over time which means I know when I’ve landed on something good. Avlon products don’t let me down.
