Avlon supports colleges to meet the Afro hairdressing criteria

Avlon has been working with hairdressing colleges and educational institutions in the UK to support tutors and prepare students for the new assessment standards for hairdressing qualifications.

Afro hair has always formed part of the hairdressing curriculum in the UK however it wasn’t until July 2021 that a review by the National Occupational Standards (NOS) ensured that assessment in this hair type was compulsory before for students could graduate.

European Education Director, Jacqui McIntosh said: “Afro hairdressing has always been included within qualification structures but usually via optional units regarding technical applications. Since the NOS review of the education and assessment standards, there has been a significant shake up in the approach to Afro hairdressing. Now students must have knowledge and be tested on Afro hair types before qualification. I think this is a brilliant development that will continue to shape our industry for the better.”

Avlon supports college tutors to equip them with the knowledge required to deliver and perform technical services to a high standard, while ensuring the new national occupational standards are embedded within their curriculum delivery.

The focus on this training is the science of excessively curly hair that sits within the classification of type 3 and 4, while understanding the shift required in the knowledge of “DEPT”, Density, Elasticity, Porosity and Torsion, which is heightened when working with hair Type 3-4.

Jacqui adds, “Our education is there to support those with knowledge and those seeking to gain knowledge, we have an extensive college program which we have rolled out to support education institutions, to execute and deliver Afro hairdressing in line with the new NOS standards.”
