Jacqui McIntosh, European education director for Avlon, is no stranger to the trends that shape our industry. We’ve caught up with Jacqui to discover the trends for afro hair in 2024, and we’re in for a treat. This year’s trends celebrate and embrace the versatility of afro-textured hair. Empowering individuals to experiment and wear their hair with pride and confidence.
Jacqui says…
“2024 is set to be an amazing year for Afro hair. We know that Afro hair is the most versatile amongst all hair categories as this variety of curl pattern allows for multiple transformations. You can go from natural, to temporary and chemical state, hence giving clients the opportunity to be experimental in creating looks while retaining the hair’s integrity and embracing the individual’s personality.
“The popularity of defined curls within styling, has now transcended into creating more precise, structured and smoother movement based on cut, face shape, and desired outcome. Dressed hair is really making a comeback, the Dorothy Dandridge look is now being polarised in many different formats by revisiting dry or wet setting hair techniques that are loosened with a soft blow-dry to the more edgy blow dry with a slight distressed finish. Styling with curling tongs is making a comeback for that precision and structured curl.
“Systems like Avlon’s Texture Release allows clients to create smoother finishes for a longer period of time without interfering with the internal structure of the hair. This allows clients to have flexibility with colour change and opens up the creative envelope for their hairstylist. This year we are definitely seeing a shift towards straighter finishes, with the increase of precision cuts, such as the pixie cut along with the timeless bob.
“Some clients are returning to finishes which will require a relaxer for the ultimate in straightening. For the first time in years, hairstylist have an arsenal of products for use to facilitate every client’s needs and wants. What we have known to work with has shifted the thought process on what can be achieved, no client will be held back by fashion purely because their hair can’t or won’t remain with absolute integrity for their desired outcome. However, the most important service that will allow all the above to be achieved is conditioning. Conditioning and the correct choice of conditioner will always be the start that allows for any temporary or permanent change to afro hair.”
We look forward to seeing these trends play out….
