KAM Hair & Body Spa celebrates 35 years in business

KAM Hair & Body Spa in Lossiemouth is celebrating an impressive 35 years in business.

Founded by Karen Thomson in 1991, the salon opened with a clear vision: to create a welcoming sanctuary in the North of Scotland where clients could enjoy all their hair and beauty needs under one roof.

More than three decades later, KAM has built a loyal following that extends far beyond the local area, with clients travelling for hours to visit its award-winning and highly experienced team.

From a small salon to full-service salon

The salon started as a small unit, but with an ever-growing clientele, Karen decided 2014 was the year to expand the salon, adding more beauty rooms, a spa, a dedicated hair and makeup bar, and improved accessibility, including a disabled bathroom

A complete hair, beauty and wellbeing destination that has continued to evolve alongside its clients.

KAM Team

Investing in people

A major part of KAM’s long-term success is Karen’s commitment to her team.

At KAM, every team member is employed, receives a competitive salary, benefits from an unlimited commission and bonus structure, and is provided with award-winning training and excellent progression opportunities.

The team is also involved in the way the salon operates, with Karen listening to their suggestions through regular meetings. Many of the team also assist at industry and local events, as well as on photographic shoots. All of this has led to high job satisfaction and morale, with the team, in turn, providing the very best customer care to clients.

Karen Thomas

Award-winning success

Over the past 35 years, KAM Hair & Body Spa has collected an impressive list of awards and accolades: Best Regional Salon Scotland at the Hair Awards, Best Fashion Salon at the Salon Business Awards and Gold Awards for both Best Hair Salon and Best Beauty Salon at the British Hair & Beauty Awards.

Karen has also received individual recognition throughout her career, including Salon Business Curl Specialist and Scottish Hairdresser of the Year at the British Hairdressing Awards.

This demonstrates not only Karen and the team’s incredible creative talent through award-winning photographic imagery, but also Karen’s highly praised business acumen, which has enabled her to build such a successful salon in a remote area over the past 35 years.

Karen on stage with the Aveda Artistic Team

A more sustainable chapter

More recently, KAM has taken the significant step of becoming an Aveda salon, further enhancing its sustainability journey by using cruelty-free hair and beauty products. This followed Karen joining the Aveda Artistic Team in 2023. Prior to this, Karen was a Matrix Artist, and with both brands she delivered presentations and seminars on stage not only across the UK but around the world, including one of her most recent trips to the Aveda Congress in Minneapolis in 2024.

It’s clear to see that Karen and KAM Hair & Body Spa have been on an incredible journey over the past 35 years, establishing the salon as one of the best in the UK. We can’t wait to see what the future holds as KAM continues to grow and thrive.
