Rush Brings ’90s Grunge Hair to Kingston University Graduate Show

The next generation of fashion talent took to the runway as Kingston University celebrated its annual Graduate Show – with the Rush Artistic Team working their magic backstage as official hair partner.

Sponsored by L’Oréal Professionnel, the show gave graduating fashion students the opportunity to bring their final projects to life, with hair playing an important role in completing each creative vision.

Rush Hair Editorial Director Tina Farey and Artistic Team Member and Creative Colour Expert Seung Ki-Baek joined the backstage team to create a series of lived-in looks inspired by the ’90s grunge clubbing scene.

Think tousled texture, undone waves and the perfectly imperfect finish of hair that looks like it has been dancing all night.

Creating the Lived-In Look

Working with L’Oréal Professionnel styling products, the team layered formulas to build volume, movement and plenty of grunge-inspired texture.

“What an incredible experience working with the Kingston University fashion students to bring their vision to life,” says Tina.

“We layered L’Oréal Professionnel products to create tousled, undone looks that replicated the effect of being out all night.”

L’Oréal Professionnel Tecni.ART Volume Extra Full Mousse was applied through the lengths before drying to create volume and movement.

The team then spritzed Tecni.ART Flex Pli throughout the hair to add body, followed by Tecni.ART Flex Curl Bounce to create loose, lived-in waves.

To finish, Tecni.ART Flex Web Paste was worked through the ends, adding the piecey, choppy texture synonymous with ’90s grunge styling.

“Congratulations to all of the graduates on an incredible show,” adds Tina. “We’re proud to have been part of such a special event.”

Supporting the Next Generation

Known for pushing creative boundaries, the Rush Artistic Team has spent more than 30 years sharing skills and creating opportunities across the hairdressing industry.

The team is also a member of the British Hairdressing Awards Hall of Fame, having won its category three times, and continues to support hairdressers through creative education, training and development.

The Kingston University Graduate Show follows the recent rekindling of Rush Hair’s relationship with L’Oréal Professionnel – and we love seeing the partnership supporting emerging creative talent across both hair and fashion.
