Inanch Emir: Tips for wearing wigs

A great wig isn’t just a style accessory any more, it’s breathable, lightweight, ultra-flexible and affordable enough to feel like a wardrobe staple. Celebrity stylist and award-winning extensionist Inanch Emir, believes a modern wig is the ultimate ‘hair switch’ — you get realistic texture, adaptable styles, and a fit that lets you forget you’re wearing anything. “At Inanch London we use customised high-definition lace and premium human-hair bases so your wig moves and breathes like natural hair, yet gives you full freedom to change your look whenever you want. That’s the evolution we’re seeing,” she explains.

Wigs offer instant transformation without the commitment or damage of chemical colouring or heat styling. Want to go platinum one day and deep chocolate the next? You can and that’s what celebrities regularly do. It’s the safest, most creative route for anyone who wants to experiment. They’re also brilliant for protecting your natural hair. You can let your natural hair rest, recover and grow strong while still having full glam whenever you want. For those with fine hair, hair thinning or post-treatment hair recovery, wigs are a confident, beautiful option — you don’t have to wait for regrowth, you get finish and fullness now.”

Inanch’s top tips

Wearing and fit

  • Always start with a well-fitted base: secure the wig so it sits naturally at the hairline and stays in place without visible pins or gaps. At Inanch we customise the cap so it’s comfortable and realistic.
  • Match the hairline to your skin tone, blend the edges (especially if the wig is lace-front) for a seamless transition.
  • Consider your lifestyle: breathable caps and lighter density hair are ideal if you live in a warmer climate or are active.

Styling

  • Treat the wig hair like real hair: if it’s human-hair base you can use low-to-moderate heat-tools (curling iron, straightener) but always use a heat-protectant.
  • Mixing textures: if your natural hair is textured, you might style the wig slightly to match your parting or shape so it integrates with your look.
  • Styling accessories: you can add headbands, clips, scarves to transform the look further — one wig, many effects.

Care and product mentions

  • Wash the wig gently when needed using a sulphate-free shampoo and a good conditioner (especially for human-hair wigs).
  • Use a specially formulated wig-care leave-in spray or detangling mist to keep the hair soft and manageable.
  • Store the wig on a wig-head or in a satin-lined box to retain shape and prevent tangling.
  • For lace-front wigs: apply a light lace adhesive or tape if needed, but always remove gently and cleanse the lace area after.
  • Recommended tools: wide-tooth comb (to detangle), a low-heat setting flat iron or curling iron (if safe for the hair type), a wig cap (to protect your scalp and natural hair under the wig).
  • At Inanch London we recommend avoiding daily heat-styling of the wig, alternate with air-drying or non-heat styling to extend its lifespan.

Extra advice

  • Treat the wig as an investment: higher-quality base and construction equals more natural movement and longer life. At our salon we use top-tier hair (Polish/Slavic) for the Bijou Hair range.
  • Rotate your looks: have two or more wigs in your wardrobe so you give one a rest while you wear the other. This extends the life of each piece and keeps your options fresh.
  • Be realistic about colour changes: if you’re going very light or very dark, choose a wig rather than bleaching your natural hair, it’s much safer and less damaging.
