Hairdressing is often described as one of the most rewarding careers in the world. Every day, hairdressers help people feel more like themselves, offering not just transformations in the mirror, but comfort, connection and conversation too.
But behind the busy salon floors and polished social feeds, many hair professionals are carrying pressures people don’t always see…
Burn out
Long hours on your feet, physically demanding days, managing clients, running businesses, social media pressure, financial stress and the constant need to stay creative can all take a toll mentally and emotionally. For freelancers and solo stylists especially, the pressure to always be “on” can feel overwhelming and lead to burn out.
Hairdressers are often the listeners, the supporters and the safe spaces for others, but not always encouraged to prioritise their own wellbeing in return.
That’s why Mental Health Awareness Week is such an important reminder that looking after yourself is not a luxury; it’s essential.
Let’s talk about it
The industry is slowly beginning to shift towards more open conversations around burnout, anxiety and work-life balance. We’re seeing more education around mindset, healthier salon cultures and creatives encouraging others to slow down, reconnect and protect their energy. We’re seeing a demand for experiences like creative retreats, wellness-focused education and community-led events to help hairdressers feel inspired without feeling exhausted.

Listen
Clients often open up in the salon chair in ways they might not elsewhere, making hairdressers natural listeners, supporters and safe spaces for conversation. But while hairdressers spend so much time listening to others, it’s equally important that they feel listened to and supported too.

Change
Even small changes can make a huge difference:

- Talking openly with your team, friends or fellow creatives
- Remembering that rest is productive too
Hairdressers truly understand one another; the highs, the lows, the pressure and the creativity that comes with the job. So why not use this week as a chance to check in with team mates, support one another and create open and honest environments. Because not only do healthy, inspired hairdressers create healthier workspace, it’s ultimately a better experience for clients too.
