Suzie McGill: Summer Colour Trends

Summer is here (featuring a typical British shower) which means it’s the perfect time for clients to go lighter and brighter with their hair looks. We’ve caught up with colour expert, Suzie McGill, who shares with us her favourite out-of-the-ordinary colour trends to inspire hair enthusiast’s and trendsetter clients…

Cosy autumnal inspired copper

Although its summer, copper is here to stay and a great choice for clients who don’t like to be too innovative with their hair colour but are still looking for a shade that’s warm and playful. Brunettes in particular are making the transition to copper toned hair this summer to give their skin a gorgeous glow whilst adding vibrancy to their hair. For clients not looking to embrace this as an all over hue, reflects of copper can be added to their hair for added dimension. The beauty of this shade is that it is super dimensional and will add a mix of tones to the client’s hair colour. Adding some cinnamon/bronze tons of copper through the ends also makes for a beautiful combination, particularly on clients with curly hair, highlighting their gorgeous natural curl pattern.

Cherryade

Cherry cola, dark cherry and cherryade are all huge trends this year. Dark and vibrant red hues that are eye-catching and that add mega shine to the hair. This trend may not be for all clients; however, the shade can be added via panels through the hair to give the hair character and personality. Using the correct burgundy tone can allow this shade to look incredibly luxurious and is a perfect summer choice for brunettes looking to add depth to their hair with colour longevity as, particularly if the hair is in a good condition, the colour pigment is persistent on a dark base shade.

Apricot

Apricot is one of the most alluring shades of the season. This shade is beautiful for blondes looking to give their skin a sun kissed appearance. For those not looking to commit to the colour all over, highlights can be added to the base blonde shade to add richness and warmth. Those with a copper base can also lighten their hair to an apricot hue by adding strawberry blonde reflects through the hair. The colour can be completely customisable for the client depending on their current colour and can be as vivid or natural as they like. For those looking for a more showstopping apricot hue, I love to blend a mixture of peach and apricot tones for a multi-tonal hair colour.

Jewel tones

For those looking for a bolder hair colour vibe, jewel tones are big news this summer. Think amethyst purple, sapphire blue and emerald green – beautiful reflective shades with high-shine that look rich and luxurious. These are such high fashion shades, perfect for those who have no limits when it comes to their hair colour. They offer unlimited colour options particularly for brunettes without the need to pre-lighten their hair and provide multi-dimensional results. For blondes, they may need to opt for more opal versions of the hues, however, these are still very much on trend and give the hair a beautiful iridescent look.

Suzie’s top tips

With all these shades colour maintenance is of course key to ensuring the colour is long-lasting and vibrant. I always recommend a colour depositing product to keep hair colour fresh between salon visits. Clients should skip products with sulphates and opt for colour-saving products instead and where possible, they should try to avoid heated styling. When heat is used, a heat protection spray is a must to help prevent colour fading. A few of my favourite products to recommend clients with more creative hair colours are:

  • Schwarzkopf Professional Chroma ID Color Mask
  • Schwarzkopf Professional Bonacure Clean Color Freeze Shampoo
  • Rainbow Room International Thermal Protect
