Rough texture, split ends, breakage and lacklustre colour? All signals that summer is nearly over. After spending the past few months under direct sunlight and in salt water and chlorine, your clients’ hair will be craving major care. Luckily, we caught celebrity stylist MJ Snyder, who shares tips and tricks for helping you repair summer damage to clients’ hair. You can use these ideas in the salon and share them with clients to help their hair recover in time for the Autumn months.

MJ Snyder says: “The biggest contributor to hair damage in the summer is UV rays and chlorine, especially if your clients have fine or colour-treated hair. Fine hair types and blonde shades are more prone to damage during the summer months. This is because lighter shades don’t have the thickness or pigmentation to block the UV rays compared to dark and coarse hair.”

Respect For Hair: What products would you recommend?
MJ: “7SECONDS Detangler acts as a leave-in conditioner and UV protectant that your clients can use daily and throw in their beach bag. To prevent further damage from chlorine, recommend coating ends with an oil as a protective barrier. U Oil is a perfect product for this.”
UV rays are typically higher in summer, making the hair dry, brittle and dull. If your client’s hair shows split or stringy ends or looks dull and lifeless, you know the hair needs a little extra care. MJ says one of the best ways to repair damaged hair is to incorporate a deep-conditioner treatment into your clients’ appointments.

MJ says: “One of my go-to products in the summer is 7SECONDS Masque. This adds back the moisture and shine to combat the damage from the summer elements.”
