Runway Ready is a fashion experience and a bootcamp in one that will get you up to speed on being a session stylist in double quick time. A one-of-a-kind, two-day course that focuses on the latest trends in runway styling, creative techniques with tips and tricks that prepare you as a stylist for the beautifully chaotic backstage environment and runway hair. AND … this is a big bonus,… all attendees who complete the course will have the opportunity to join the Unite team for Fashion Week.
In Autumn 2022, Unite hosted a competition to offer a free place on Runway Ready 2023, held in January. Nathan Klein scooped the prize, and has just completed two days on the Runway Ready bootcamp. We catch up with him to find out what it’s been like:

Hi Nathan… tell us about yourself?
“I’ve been hairdressing for 4-5 years and I only qualified as NVQ Level 3 a couple of months ago. I tend to specialise in colour but I’m trying now to go down the route of doing session, so I’ve been throwing myself in the deep end of assisting different stylists doing photo shoots, but also actually contacting different photographers and agencies and doing my own photo shoots. I’m working on getting a portfolio together that shows different variations of looks. Trying to educate myself by assisting people like Simon Webster, Liam Curran… . I take tips and tricks to progress, and watch a lot of videos.“

What made you enter the competition to win a place on Runway Ready?
“I saw the amazing opportunities offered by Unite from doing different catwalks and runways. I wanted to push myself to create something out of my comfort zone to elevate my skills. When I saw what the course Runway Ready was about, I knew it would give me fundamental skills to further develop what I want to achieve with session.”
Product savvy
What did you think of the Unite products you tried out?
“They were brilliant. I really like the hairspray and that it actually holds really strongly, that’s vital for fashion week. It’s really nice with durability to hold. I used it to create a structured piece where it was almost like being glued. I used the products and set it with hairdryer. “

What were you expecting from the course?
“Gaining the fundamential skills and the core knowledge of session, what’s needed and you need in your kit. Learning different styles to take to the salon or a photo shoot and to assist backstage.
It’s been amazing, so much fun. I’ve learned so many different tips and tricks – some I already know but it makes me think, oh I should have done it ‘that way’ – it makes more sense. Even placement of how you would do certain skills – it’ makes you think differently. I strengthen and progress further.”

What’s next?
“I’m going to take the opportunity to go to London Fashion Week with Unite and going forward, do more fashion weeks. And to keep developing further… “
Good for you Nathan! You go!
