If you’re based in the South East of the UK, and looking for more support from your bank, chamber of commerce or local news media, then here’s a story to share. Figures released today by the insurance company Direct Line reveal that nearly one third of the UK’s hair and beauty businesses (including mobile hairdressers, and nail technicians) operate in the South East. Set against the news that the UK hair and beauty industry grew by 13% between 2011 and 2016 to now turnover nearly £7billiion annually. And we’re staggered to read that 29,000 companies in the South East more than double the next closest region, the North West, which has around 11,000. While we’re keen to point out this does include London, it’s also perhaps testament to the TOWIE effect?! That’s around one salon for every 252 adults. What an industry!
Jane Guaschi, Business Manager at Direct Line for Business, says: “The beauty industry has been greatly boosted by rise of social media celebrities such as Zoella and Kylie Jenner. Coupled with this, the looks being popularised by the cast of TOWIE have increased the demand for treatments in recent years. On the high street we’ve seen an explosion in growth with new nail salons and hairdressers opening across the UK to cater for the increased demand.”
