News added 23/08/17: So, what IS the system?
Pioneers in organic hair colour, Organic Colour Systems have specially formulated three care ranges that compliment the hair colouring process and ensure the best level of after care possible: Status Quo, Power Build and Aqua Boost. Organic Colour Systems salons analyse the health of their clients hair by performing a Wet Stretch Test before any service to ascertain what condition the hair is in. Healthy hair means better colour coverage, results and longer-lasting vibrancy so the Wet Stretch Test defines which care range is needed to get the hair in the best possible condition prior to beginning the colour process.
Natalie Lupton, Organic Colour Systems mentor and owner of The Hair Secret, Berkhamstead gives us an insight into her favourite OCS products…
“My favourite range is Power Build. It has been amazing for my clients that have over-processed, heat-damaged hair. Power Build Revamp has completely changed one of my clients hair. She has extensions and the last set left her natural hair very damaged and lacking in protein, after using Revamp for a month (twice a week) she has seen a massive improvement, her hair is stronger and looks thicker!”
The entire Power Build range is designed to add strength and volume to weak or damaged hair, renewing shine and improving strength and colour retention. It uses certified organic natural sunflower seed extracts to reduce damage and split ends as well as natural extracts of lemon, apple, green tea, wheat proteins and vitamin B5 to improve hairs suppleness and volume. Power Build Revamp contains 8% organic Quinoa. Studies show that with just a 1% Quinoa, damage inside the hairs cortex is reduced by a massive 26%. Wowza! Clients love to know that it is the power of natural ingredients working wonders!
Aqua Boost works to add lost moisture back into the hair , and is ideal for use on clients who have grey hair as it helps to soften the greys allowing for a better, more even coverage. The Aqua Boost Treatment works wonders and is so easy to apply. Shampoo with Aqua Boost Shampoo, towel dry, apply the Aqua Boost Treatment and leave on for 15 minutes. Top tip: This is great when having a bath as the heat helps to open the hair cuticles allowing for a super nourishing treatment! Rinse then apply conditioner which is recommended to be left for another 15 minutes.
The Aqua Boost range contains organic aloe, natural black oat extract, vitamin B5 and lecithin that deeply nourishes dry and damaged hair leaving it naturally moisturised, shiny and easy to manage. There is also a Leave-In Conditioner in this range which contains natural wheat proteins and safflower phospholipids to help maintain hairs natural moisture balance, prevent cuticle damage and improve colour retention, too.
Natalie says: “I’ve found that stocking Organic Colour Systems has made it easier for my stylists to recommend products as clients can see the results right before their eyes and want to take them home! The Wet Stretch Test shows clients exactly what their hair is lacking in and how the treatments that we use work to bring their hair back to health. Results are seen right away which is why our overall retail sales have increased from 6% to 10% as a salon”. Great work, Natalie!

News added 27/07/17: Inspired collection 2017: Splicing
Using brand ambassador Karine Jackson’s 2017 collection, Why Label It? as inspiration, Organic Colour Systems created their Inspired collection. Every year, Karine creates a trend-setting, editorial collection for Organic Colour Systems using their naturally healthier colour palette, but this year the brand decided to reach out to the consumer market instead with the client-friendly Inspired collection. The collection uses the same specialist techniques as Karine’s Why Label It?, but demonstrates that these Avant Garde, high fashion looks can be readily commercialised and presented as something that Organic Colour System stylists could deliver in their own salons and offer to their clients.
The Organic Colour Systems Inspired collection 2017 used four different hair colouring techniques: Splicing, Floodlighting, Colour Blocking and Tie Dye. This week, we’ll be focusing on the Splicing technique and how to achieve this with any mix of colours, following the simplistic step-by-step guide below:
- Clarify the hair then Wet Stretch Test and pre-treat according to results.
- Taking a triangle section at the front of the hair to the sides of the eyebrows, pre-lighten using Naturlite White Lightening Powder and 6% Cream Activator.
- Next apply all over colour to the rest of the hair. In this case No Limits Chestnut semi-permanent colour was used.
- Leave to process.
- Rinse and shampoo pre-lightened section. Rinse only colour from the rest of the hair.
- Returning to the front pre-lightened section. Apply chosen hair colours section by section.
TOP TIP: Vary sizes of each section and use clear acetate as an application tool.
- Colours used for front section:
• 4 x pumps No Limits Violet mixed with 1 x tsp PowerBuild Treatment
• 1 x pump No Limits Blue mixed with 1 x tsp PowerBuild Treatment
• 2 x pumps No Limits Red mixed with 1 x scoop PowerBuild Treatment
8. Leave to process.
9. Rinse only, colour from front section, towel dry and then condition all over and leave for 5 minutes.
To finish, Organic Colour Systems Thermal 2 Twenty and Spritz was used.

News added 30/06/17: For Organic Colour Systems, education is key. Their education programme is, and always has been, at the core of all they do and acts as an unprecedented driver for the success of their global business. As a brand, they are committed to hands on, face-to-face education as the best and only way to ensure that their unique and unequalled ‘system’ is being used in the correct way and clients receive the best results possible. It’s a win-win. Salon owners who decide they want to carry OCS know from the offset that it is a commitment; it is a system after all, and therefore the willingness to learn and understand the processes is hugely beneficial to everyone involved – the brand, salon and client. This enables both a high-end salon service to operate and provides important retail opportunities, too.
This year, OCS have introduced their highly acclaimed mentor programme to the UK, appointing three successful salon owners as ‘salon mentors’. These individuals have seen first-hand the positive changes to their businesses that has come as a result from partnering with OCS. The mentors are passionate about the brand and in teaching others the benefits of using natural, healthier, non-damaging ways to colour and treat clients hair. Rebecca Barnes, Natalie Lupton and Bobbie Mills had to complete a rigorous, year long, advanced education process to gain the title of UK mentor and with their acquired knowledge now lead OCS education workshops across the country under the keen guidance of Global Education Manager, Cloe Hazell.
Organic Colour Systems currently run four core workshops in the UK:
• The FUNDAMENTALS workshop is open to everyone – new or old, looking to find out more information about OCS, simply refresh their knowledge or train their salon staff. The workshop explains why and how OCS is different to other non-ammonia colour brands and gives a detailed insight into the system, the products and their ingredients. It also delves into the chemistry behind the biological structure of the hair and how OCS natural chemistry and sophisticated system complements it.
OCS salons can then sign up to attend three additional workshops that cover specific skill sets to equip colourists to confidently administer the system when asked to undertake common colouring services:
• The RESISTANT GREY workshop demonstrates how to cover and colour stubborn grey hair and works to improve the confidence of OCS users, showing how easily the products work to create beautiful, healthy grey coverage.
• The BLONDES workshop shows how to create the perfect lift for blonde clients; how to create tonal highlights with great condition and shine whilst maintaining strong, undamaged and healthy hair.
• The FASHION COLOURS workshop gives attendees an insight into how to push the boundaries with colour and create on-trend results for clients – showing there are no limits when it comes to using OCS. Colour wise – anything is possible, and the integrity and health of the hair does not have to be compromised to achieve results.
For OCS salons, the icing on the cake is the bespoke, in salon training they benefit from. Whether it’s just the salon owner or the whole team, OCS spends one-on-one time with their salons to further educate and support them to fill the specific knowledge gaps they each may have. The education never stops and we think you would be hard-pressed to find such enlightening education elsewhere. The workshops teach the differences between Organic Colour Systems and the benefits of using their products over other brands. In turn, both the health of clients and staff will improve, revenue for your business will grow and you can benefit from the knowledge that you’re not using any harsh chemicals on your clients, but instead creating natural and organic colour with no limits. Sounds good, doesn’t it? Watch the video, then browse the pictures below to get a feel for the OCS way!
