A collaboration between Charlotte Mensah (owner of the Hair Lounge Notting Hill, and our go-to for Afro hair gorgeousness) and photographer Lily Bertrand-Webb catches our eye. Images shot for web-tastic site Refinery29 UK, focus on the art of African hair threading and we’re intrigued. The art is a west African technique used as a protective style (an alternative to heat styling) where extra-strong cotton, wool, yarn or nylon is wrapped around sections of hair. The styles are properly three-dimensional and according to Charlotte are “ a combination of patterns etched on the scalp and threaded strands which are raised form the scalp.” The hair is stiff but pliable hence can be coiled into bold shapes.
