News added 05/12/17: N O C T U R N E: 6/10 Uros Mikic
The October Nocturne super-shoot included a handful of incredible talent International stylists that joined the British contingent. Among them was Uros Mikic, owner of Kinky Curly Straight salon in South Australia. A former finalist for Australian Hairdresser of the Year, Uros really knows his stuff and I think you’ll agree that the looks he pulled out the bag for ghd Professional in just 12 hours are pretty special…

News added 28/11/17: N O C T U R N E: 4/10 Jamie Benny
A member of the newly crowned Artistic Team of the Year, Jamie Benny has been the lynchpin of the Rush Artistic Team for several years and has grown from strength to strength in that time. His collection work is beautiful, and he brought all these killer styling skills to the Nocturne super-shoot:
“It was incredible to be involved in such an energetic photoshoot, and I felt honoured to be asked as it meant that my style suited the brand. The creative energy was amazing as we were all so passionate. The creative freedom we had on the shoot is what we hairdressers and creatives dream of! With free coffee, a live DJ and a constant supply of food we never had a dull moment. I loved all of my looks that I created as I really tried to have different lengths and styles covered to show off the true versatility of the ghd tools and my skills combined. I had to plan the looks carefully as I knew I would be creating different textures in the hair, and this is where the idea of “infinite styling” comes in – it means to me that you can produce multiple looks on one head of hair without compromising the style. To me, ghd is a brand that has incredible tools and this shoot was really great see not just how the brand would use them but the hairdressers that were picked. I am extremely grateful for the experience and to collaborate with such an influential brand.” See Jamie’s looks below:
News added 23/11/17: N O C T U R N E: 3/10 Sophie Laidlaw
As a member of the ghd Art Team and finalist in the 2017 British Hairdressing Awards for Scottish Hairdresser of the Year, Sophie Laidlaw of Wonderland salon in Livingston is having quite a year. She’s also a regular on the fashion week scene, and thus very used to turning editorial looks around in double-quick time… We caught up with her to ask how she found the 12 hour Nocturne super-shoot:
“I was thrilled to be a part of the Nocturne shoot and am still reliving the experience. The vibe was energetic from 7pm until 7am – though there was some delirium around 3-4am!
I started by using the model’s natural texture; then I moved on to a wet look and blow-dry, before building up different textures within the hair, adding to it each time before putting it up. The tools we had to work with gave us complete freedom and actually made ten looks relatively easy to achieve. Infinite styling for me is styling that doesn’t stress out the hair. Styling that holds, but is reworkable. It’s so important when we’re creating look after look that we still respect the integrity of the hair. I think with the growth of social media and the ability to share a look globally in an instant, infinite styling is something that our clients now demand too. We had no washing facilities but I don’t think it stopped anyone – after all, we had every ghd tool at our fingertips! I thrive in that environment especially when there is a pressure to change things up quickly. ghd for me is a brand that provides ‘cool girl’ hair and I love it because of the front-line research and development that goes into every product. They’re all about respecting the integrity of the hair, but without compromising style.” See all of Sophie’s looks below:
News added 13/11/17: N O C T U R N E: 2/10 Chris Southern
As a member of Headmasters’ Pro Artistic team and the ghd events team, Chris Southern is no stranger to working long hours on a professional shoot. So he was well-equipped to take on the challenge of the 12-hour Nocturne super-shoot for ghd Professional last month and here’s what he had to say:
“It was such a pleasure to be involved in the Nocturne shoot – I jump at any opportunity to work with ghd. The event was like nothing I’d ever experienced before – and initially, I felt an overwhelming urge to compare my work to all the other stylists. As the evening went on I realised it wasn’t a competition but a celebration of different skills and tastes. My favourite look was the faux deadlock hair-up I did; it got a lot of attention on the night from the other stylists. It was something I had to figure out for myself but it was pretty simple: just twist a section, a light spray of ghd’s final fix and then one pass over with the platinum styler and voila!
To plan for the shoot I brought a bag full of hair and accessories that I’ve gathered from recent shoots. I made a list of ideas and then put them in order of how much product was needed in the hair. I’m a big believer in “prep well, prep once”. There were many challenges including not having a backwash but for it was time! 10 looks in 12 hours is hard. This is why infinite styling is so important – especially working in the session industry. I need to be able to change a look in minutes without having to rewash the hair!
In 2014, I got into ghd’s style squad and the shoot was an opportunity to show ghd and the industry what I have learnt and how my taste has developed since the ghd style squad opened the door for me!” See all 9 of Chris’s looks below:
News added 27/10/17: N O C T U R N E: 1/10 Jordanna Cobella
A remarkable 12-hour shoot took place on the 2nd October at the Crossrail Place Rooftop Gardens in Canary Wharf to celebrate ghd Professional’s new Nocturne styling collection. With 1o stylists on hand, 10 models, and one photographer (Jack Eames), ghd Professional aimed to capture more than 100 images that fulfilled the Nocturne transition from day-t0-night and the brand’s #infinitestyle opportunity mantra. We’ll be sharing the finished looks from each stylist over the coming weeks, but first up we bring you the final images from 2017 Fame Team member, Jordanna Cobella…
On her Nocturne Super Shoot experience, Jordanna says: “I felt so privileged to be invited and to be considered as an artist by such a global brand! ghd have always been at the forefront of hair styling and the atmosphere at each event they hold is unforgettable. We were full of beans and buzzing with the excitement to start, and then at 10pm we were given food and snacks that really picked us up and gave us an extra boost of energy. By 3am, it felt like we had known our models forever even though we had only spent half a night with them! We were actually working quicker and becoming more creative as the early hours approached, my last few looks were thrown together and much more experimental…but in a good way! Surprisingly, these were my best looks even though I hadn’t planned them as much as I normally would – which shows to trust your creative instinct. I had two favourite looks; my first was a very simple 70’s wave and the second I named ‘jungle vibe’ which was inspired by the setting of the shoot in the roof garden; a knotted plait with sleek side rope plaits.
It does require some planning when you’re doing 10 looks and also depends on the model’s natural hair texture. Definitely one of the challenges was not meeting the model beforehand as you couldn’t plan the order of your looks, and having no backwash meant you had to really rely on using minimal or no product but that was all part of the fun! I started off with no product at all and did a few hair-ups, and then moved onto more structured waves/curls/combing/teasing/plaiting using more product as I went. The very last look I did was a smooth and sleek glam wave which used the leftover texture from the shoot but brushed out with a bristle brush and coated in a light oil. The event was fantastically planned with incredible people behind it, it’s something you would never think of doing but the idea behind it makes total sense! ghd means so much not only to me, but also to my clients – their hair truly tells a story and I feel the images from the shoot really capture that!”
News added 19/10/17: CRIMP IT UP
All hail ghd for revamping the 80s classic – the crimper – and bringing it to the millennial market. With this season’s trend for texture and 80s-inspired looks taking centre stage on catwalks around the world, ghd were quick off the mark to develop and deliver their newest innovation: the Contour professional crimper. Though this is no shock to us as we’ve come to rely on ghd being ahead of the curve thanks to their in-house trend-forecasters watching the fashion world very closely… And as part of this, ghd has created five key looks for using the Contour: Freestyle Feather; Hidden Volume; Plumped-up Braid; Statement Veil; and Textured Pony.
Anyway! Featuring advanced ceramic heat technology and multi-dimensional plates, the ghd contour allows you to add depth and bold texture to any look, to instantly enhance shape and volume. Suitable for all hair types the ghd contour professional crimper uses the optimum styling temperature of 185°C to create impactful looks, that last.
“Crimping is a session stylist’s secret to creating incredible volume and big hair. We all carry a crimper in our kit as they’re incredible for adding volume and texture, so I’m thrilled to be involved in creating this new super tool for ghd!” says Adam Reed, ghd brand ambassador.
News added 10/10/17: The NOCTURNE collection
We welcome ghd Professional’s new Christmas offering with open arms… Not only is the trend-driven NOCTURNE collection available in a sumptuous purple pattern, it also features a AW17 exclusive: the ghd contour! We couldn’t be happier to see crimpers back on the menu and will be sure to put this one down on our Christmas list.
But let’s not get stuck on the Contour, there’s plenty more to love in the new Nocturne range… Channeling the transition from day-to-night, the Nocturne mantra of #InfiniteStyle possibilities is one that we know will appeal to all your clients. News added 06/10/17: Nocturne LIVE
Earlier this week, ghd Professional held at almighty 12-hour shoot at the uber-cool Crossrail Place Roof Gardens in Canary Wharf to celebrate their new day-to-night Nocturne collection. With a ‘no brief’ brief 10 stylists with 10 models undertook the challenge to create 10 different looks each equating to a mind-blowing 100 looks styled and shot in just one night. With no-basins available to the stylists, they had to maximise ghd’s kind-to-hair technology and optimum temperature to style, style and style again, transforming their models look again and again throughout the night. On hand to capture the behind the scenes images (below) and the all-important 100 looks was photographer Jack Eames, who had use of the enchanting Crossrail Roof Gardens as well as the surrounding areas in Canary Wharf to shoot the looks. We’ve seen a few of the pictures already and they promise a real WOW. We cannot wait to see the finished 100 when they’re ready for release in the coming weeks…
The dream-team of stylists involved included: Leighanne Regan, Jordanna Cobella, Chris Southern, Frazer Wallace, Sophie Laidlaw, Jamie Benny and international stylists Uros Mikic, Jorge DeSancho, Igor Rago and Dashi Rasnici.
ghd global head of education, Jo Robertson, said: “This is the first shoot of its kind and the perfect way to showcase the infinite styling abilities of our new Nocturne range. All ghd products are designed to allow you to style and style again with no compromise to hair health, but this range is also about celebrating the blurred lines between night and day. We’re so proud of the ten stylists that took part in [the] shoot and the work they produced against the clock – it just goes to show that with the right tools and teamwork, anything is possible.”
News added 26/09/17: ghd Professional’s #choptoyourchin day on the 21st September was a triumph! The campaign which will run throughout September and October – with the help of ghd stylists – aims to encourage clients to chop to their chin and donate their hair (a minimum of 7 inches) to the Little Princess Trust. The Little Princess Trust is an incredible organisation that makes and supplies real hair wigs to children across the UK that have lost their hair through cancer or other illnesses. Already, the reception from clients in ghd salons up and down the country has been phenomenal and LPT has received hundreds of donations. Endorsing the campaign on the 21st September was model Amber Le Bon, who proudly had 7″ of her hair chopped by ghd’s global ambassador Adam Reed and donated to the charity. Amber says: “I really love what Little Princess Trust does; it’s a charity that makes real hair wigs for children who have lost their hair. The confidence that it gives to kids is priceless. My hair will grow back and it is going to kids whose hair isn’t growing right now. If I make one kid smile by adding to a wig that they are wearing then that makes me so happy.”
Check out the gallery below for Amber’s transformation, and a section of brave clients who undertook the #choptoyourchin challenge too:
News added 21/09/17: Led by their global ambassador Adam Reed, the ghd Professional team partnered with Julien Macdonald to style his star-studded SS18 show at London Fashion Week. With celebrity models aplenty including Hailey Baldwin, Alessandro Ambrosio and Winnie Harlow the style stakes were high! But Adam and the team pulled out all the stops to deliver 90s-inspired, high-octane, super-glamourous hair on all the models. The result was seriously luxe finish, with beautiful glossy movement. J’adore!
“We are bringing straight hair back,” explained Adam. “But in a very modern way. The secret to success here lies in the process – namely starting the look with a brilliant blow dry using the ghd Air Hairdryer. This achieves brilliant condition, gloss, shine and movement. Afterwards, we ran the ghd Platinum Styler over hair to eliminate any last frizz or kinks”.
News added 15/09/17: When you’re picking shows to support at NYFW, you can’t get much cooler than Jeremy Scott and Alexander Wang and when you’re picking stylists to work with at these shows, you can’t get much more coveted individuals than Eugene Souleiman and Guido. ghd Professional’s attendance at NYFW really packed a powerful punch for these reasons… See the results below:
Jeremy Scott SS18 – All About The Girl
For the 20th anniversary collection, Eugene created statement centre partings, coloured accents, angelic buns and techno-tails that played out to each models individual character.
“A look that was a personal favourite of mine and looks sharp and raw was what I call the Techo Tail. Tough and sharp, this twist on the classic ponytail sees the hair shaped and pulled back to elevate the tail above the neck line,” says Eugene. To create this look, Eugene’s team used the ghd Platinum Styler starting at the roots and working downwards, adding more tension as they pulled down on the hair creating a sleek, straight look. Top tip: Always let the pony cool down before brushing it out.
Alexander Wang SS18 – New Wave
Guido used the natural texture of the model’s hair to create a “lived-in look” with plenty of movement.
Using the ghd Air with a diffuser to mimic air-drying the hair, Guido then created a messy middle part with his fingers, and gently bent hair around ghd’s Classic Curl Tong to create idiosyncratic waves. Easy!
“This look requires simply two tools: the ghd Air Hairdryer and ghd Classic Curl Tong. Great styling tools are essential for creating simple, modern textures” says Guido.
News added 06/09/17: Listen up!
ghd Professional’s #choptoyourchin day in partnership with the Little Princess Trust takes place on the 21st September and we couldn’t be more excited to hear that Amber Le Bon will be joining the fun and losing 7″ of her lovely long hair for charity Throughout September and October, the #choptoyourchin campaign aims to encourage people with long hair to chop off 7″ and donate them to the Little Princess Trust who supply children across the UK and Ireland who have suffered from cancer and other illnesses with real hair wigs. It’s a wonderful charity and since its inception in 2006, has given away over 5,000 free wigs! It’s an amazing feat and one that ghd Professional hopes to build upon with your support.
Writing on Instagram, Amber said: “Saying goodbye to my super long hair on the 21st September, when I’ll be taking of 7″ for charity with ghd and Little Princess Trust. For me, it’s not quite #choptoyourchin but nearly there!” We can’t wait to see Amber’s new look!

News added 15/08/17: If you’ve managed to convince a client to have 6/7 inches off for the Little Princess Trust, and even if you haven’t… helping your clients to style mid length hair can be difficult. Clients often ask for easy short to mid-length styles that they can achieve on their own hair, so why not suggest the Luxe Lob to them? It looks easy-peasy, and the results are gorge – we’ll definitely be giving it a go!
News added 01/08/17: GET SOCIAL with #myhaircares
As part of their ongoing support of Breast Cancer Now, ghd is encouraging salons to add a splash of pink to their styles this summer. The #myhaircares campaign will inspire stylists to add an array of pink accessories to hair, then share the results on social media. Each week, one stylist will win a spot prize for their style – as well as being featured on ghd’s social profiles and continuing to raise awareness of breast cancer and ghd’s ongoing support of the charities that fight it. There’s no shortage of hair adornments to choose from and recent runways serve up no shortage of ideas – from an abundance of ribbons at Rodarte’s SS18 show to sleek black bows on the catwalks of Tory Burch, Marchesa, Temperley and Rochas, current hair trends are all about accessorising!
Whether you’re participating in the #myhaircares campaign or just want to build your profile, here are ghd’s tips to make sure you stand out:
• KEEP THINGS PROFESSIONAL
Look at the first nine images on your Instagram and ask yourself, do these represent a professional hairstylist at the top of their game, sharing work that’s going to get them noticed? If not, it’s time for a spring clean. Bringing a bit of your personal life into your feed is fine, but you need to ensure the images are high quality and that you’d be happy for any potential employee or client to see them. If in doubt, create a personal account and one dedicated solely to your hair work. Make sure that your username is something clear and professional, and ensure that your bio tells the world that you’re a hairstylist, where you’re based and how people can get hold of you.
• MAKE IT LOOK GOOD
As a creative, making things looks beautiful comes easy to you. Apply that creative flair and vision to your Instagram feed, for an account that stands out and appeals to people. Think about composition; is this photo clear, with no old coffee cups or mirror reflections in the background? Is it well lit? Find a space in your salon that you know works, and make that your go-to photo spot. Think about making your shots more interesting; things like close-ups, unexpected angles and detail shots can be really effective in diversifying your feed as well as showing your artistic vision. Editing apps like VSCOcam, Colour Story and Snapseed can all help you tweak lighting and saturation to make shots better, too. Maximise Instagram’s functionality for a clean, streamline feed – use the multiple upload tool to create before/after posts, rather than doing split photos, and use Stories to share any behind-the-scenes stuff or unfinished looks. Keep your feed focused on clear, great, finished hair shots.
• TAG, YOU’RE IT
You get up to use 30 hashtags per image. Five is a good amount to start with. Make sure you research the best possible hashtags for you. For example, using hashtags like #girl and #instafamous won’t get you noticed – they’re too overused. The goal is to end up on the featured list of the hashtag you use: using #hairstylist means you’ll be competing with more than 12 million other images, but a more specific hashtag like #blowdry (675k posts) means you’re more likely to appear on that coveted feature list – and if it’s a brand’s own hashtag, you’re more likely to get noticed by them, too. If you want to keep them hidden from your post – because let’s face it, they can look a bit messy – use line breaks in your caption, or add the tags in a comment, where they’ll still count. When it comes to tagging people in your post, think carefully. Brands love to know that you’re using their products and tagging them increases your chance of getting reposted. Be mindful though; if you tag competing brands, you run the risk of not being featured at all.
• GET SOCIAL
The clue is in the name with social media; being social is the best way to get noticed. Spend time commenting and liking feeds that you follow and the images of those you want to work with; the more you put into Instagram, the more you’ll get out of it and it really does help to grow your presence on the platform.
• CREATE A SCHEDULE
It can be tough to get the balance right when you’re busy, but start slowly – commit to uploading a new photo three times a week and slowly build up over a couple of months to posting something new every day. Set a reminder in your phone and stick to it. You can also use Instagram’s Drafts feature to save a few posts, so they’ll all ready to go when you hit the button. Saving some images for a rainy day is a great way to make sure you post frequently; take several shots of a subject, or save inspiration shots, so you can build a library of images to post when you haven’t got something new to bring to the grid.
Be sure to tag us in @hairdressingnews! We’d love to see what you’re up to, and who knows… maybe we will share your work too.

News added 18/07/17: #ChopToYourChin!
Working alongside the Little Princess Trust (LPT), ghd’s new nationwide campaign aims to encourage your clients to get the chop! Launched last week, at ghd’s Dean Street Studios in London, brand ambassador Zoe Irwin used a live model to demonstrate how much hair to chop. The gorgeous (and brave!) model had a total of 7 inches of healthy hair chopped and sent off to LPT, which will later be made into a wig for children who have lost their hair through cancer and other illnesses.
Jo Robertson says: “We’re proud and excited to be collaborating with The Little Princess Trust. With the rise in demand for wigs, the charity needs more help than ever to generate hair donations, so to run this campaign alongside our amazing ghd salons is fantastic.” It’s a great initiative, which culminises on the 21st September with a nationwide #ChopToYourChin day. Nine key salons have been chosen to head up the campaign across the country, they are: • Alchemy • Hare & Bone • Indy • Ken Picton • La Belle • McIntyres • Voodoo • Room 97 • Sharon Malcolm. But ghd are on the look out for more salons to participate, and would love you all to get involved. We can’t wait to see all the action from the 21st September – so don’t be shy, send us your pictures and let us know how you get on! It’s a wonderful, wonderful cause after all… Be brave and #choptoyourchin we say!
News added 05/07/17: ghd Professional have a long-standing partnership with Breast Cancer Now, and every year they create a unique pink styler for salons to promote and sell throughout Breast Cancer Awareness month (October) which gives a donation to the charity. Since 2004, ghd has partnered with breast cancer charities worldwide, raising over £10 million to date across the globe though the sales of the limited edition pink stylers.
In 2016, ghd challenged their salons to fundraise for the charity through the sales of their Electric Pink tools range. The five salons who raised the most were invited to a special dinner to celebrate their efforts which, combined, exceeded £13,000. Huge congratulations to top salons:
• Hi-Tec Hairdressing, Omagh, Northern Ireland
• McGarry & Blair, Glasgow
• Hayward Lane, Bedford
• Lotus Styling, Bognor Regis
• Saks, Bromsgrove
Following a luxe lunch at the Berkeley Hotel, the winning salons were given a personal tour of the Breast Cancer Now Institute for Cancer Research, and were able to see first-hand how ghd’s long-term support is contributing to breakthroughs in research. Amazingly, the money these five salons alone raised is equivalent to one of the following:
• 534 hours of scientific research
• 19,996 flasks for growing cancer cells
• 53 antibodies, an essential research tool for BCN scientists.
Jo Robertson, head of global education at ghd, said: “ghd is proud to work with such an amazing charity and to give something back to those top salons who have gone above and beyond to join us in raising money is fantastic. A massive thank you!”
In the UK & Northern Ireland, all donations from ghd pink products go to Breast Cancer Now. Through research projects funded by partners like ghd and through salons, their aim is that by the year 2050, everyone that develops breast cancer will live.

News added 23/06/17: The science behind a Great Hair Day…
Our industry has always been one that has pushed to provide consumers with the very latest in science and technology, grown largely out of a desire to help our clients to look and feel their very best. This means ensuring that we are up to speed on cutting edge tech and the very latest trends. Helping hairdressers to stay ahead of the curve has been ghd, who have been at the very forefront of hair-enhancing technology for 16 years. Here’s how they’ve managed to stay streets ahead:
Since their inception in 2001, ghd’s technological advancements have always gone hand-in-hand with broader fashion and lifestyle trends – influencing hairstyles on a global scale. From their research lab in Cambridge, the brand has pioneered a series of trailblazing technologies which have transformed the way that salons and consumers alike are able to style their hair.
For example, the revolutionary ghd aura® hairdryer introduced two technological breakthroughs into the UK market in just one product: Laminair™ technology which delivers a more concentrated airflow; and Cool-Wall™ which prevents the dryer getting too hot, enabling stylists to get closer to the scalp for enhanced root lift and volume.
Then in 2015, ghd launched their most advanced styler: the platinum®. This tool boasts the brand’s most innovative development to date – intelligent tri-zone technology®. Tri-zone® consists of six quick-thinking sensors (three in each plate), acting to maintain a consistent heat, meaning no sudden surges or drops in temperature. Sustaining this optimum temperature ensures heat is distributed evenly and constantly – which is kinder to hair, reduces breakages and importantly, increases shine. A unique wishbone hinge was also fitted to the platinum® to hold the plates in perfect alignment for increased stylist control.
With such advanced science and thorough research behind each of their products, it’s no surprise that ghd holds patents for their forward-thinking technologies. This is an example of a brand that is not afraid to invest in their development; who looks at the practicalities of their products; and always keeps their finger on the pulse of global trends.
Check out the rigorous processes tools are tested against in the ghd’s Cambrige lab below:
