News added 13/07/17: It’s student graduation season, with proud relatives attending ceremonies at universities up and down the country. We’re thrilled to see these pictures of Trevor Sorbie collecting his honorary doctorate at the University of West Scotland. Awarded in particular for his work on mynewhair charity. Trevor’s wife is the photographer. She’s as pleased as punch for him and the great man’s smile tells us he’s equally thrilled. Bravo, we say. Fantastic to see his hard work, passion and generosity recognised in such an important way.

The Trevor Sorbie brand is having one helluva year! Our main man announced earlier this year that Trevor Sorbie International Plc has partnered with Dubai-based group The Grooming Company in order to roll out both national and international growth plans (don’t fear, Trevor remains chief creative ambassador). A flurry of creative activity has seen Trevor and his team become much more visible on UK stages including Tribu-te’s On The Edge in April, a workshop at Colour World UK, and announcements of appearances for both the Autumn Tribu-te Show and Salon International later this year. No wonder the University of West of Scotland is conferring on Trevor himself an honorary doctorate later this summer, recognizing his career and the pioneering, non-profit charity he has created, mynewhair. Our money is on a further honour from the Queen to add to Trevor’s MBE. He’s definitely worth it.

There are now 135 of them, but Trevor Sorbie’s team members join up like a really close family unit. Attending the company’s bi-annual gathering ‘the Event’ in London recently, we were knocked out by the sense of unity and mutual support we saw all around. As part of the panel to select winners in the various in-house awards categories, the standard of creativity to judge was impressive. Witness: the Assistant competition was won by Josie Staines who produced the most inventive evening look we’ve seen in years – crystals, gel and superb styling all in evidence. In the other artistic categories, we shout out to some truly creative hairdressers. Four ‘
NB. ‘Pure’ image categories requested unretouched looks straight from the hairdresser’s smart phone, while the Assistant category was judged on live models, and the Professional Image could come from a shoot collection:
• Pure Image Women’s – Caroline Schmitt, Covent Garden • Pure Image Men’s – Ryan Forsythe, Covent Garden • Pure Image Colour – Fiona Baxendale & Mai Ha, Manchester • Pure Image Avant Garde – Mai Ha, Manchester • Professional Image ‘The Look’ – John Spanton, Covent Garden.

Launching his first barbershop (within his recently-opened Richmond on Thames salon), Trevor Sorbie is going back to beginnings! He trained initially as a barber in his Dad’s shop before heading to Mayfair to champion ladies hairdressing, dontcha know. The new venture is headed up by barber Samuel Galvin (with salon-owner Suella Ritchie), who says: “The Trevor Sorbie Barber Shop represents everything a barber shop should be. Good cuts, good shaves and everything in between.” Way to go guys!

It’s been a fabulous year of celebration for Trevor Sorbie to mark his 50th year as a hairdresser. At the Tribu-te Show 2014, the big man was presented with a bespoke trophy and invited to hear what some of his erstwhile team and creative directors had to say about his influence on their career. Did you realize that Eugene Souleiman, Vivienne MacKinder, Antoinette Beenders, Brooks & Brooks, Angelo Seminara are all from the Sorbie school of hairdressing? That’s quite some pedigree… and the story doesn’t end there. Trevor continues to encourage, train and nurture amazing talent – Johanna Cree Brown and Nathan Walker are currently flying the Sorbie standard. We heart them all. See the pix here:
News added Summer 2014:
Making some noise in Hampstead, Trevor Sorbie salon manager Bree Davie decided to combine a celebration of Trevor’s big 50 years in the industry, with some fundraising. And how! We were super-impressed by Bree’s exhorting more than 75 clients and contacts to donate draw prizes to pull in £3825 to share between Trevor’s My New Hair, and the Anthony Nolan Ward at the local Royal Free Hospital (the signed footie boots from Spurs player Jan Vertonghen were specially popular). And we toasted her success in signature cocktails ‘The Sorbie Sling’, created by Andy Seach of Bar-Fly UK. The models wearing updated versions of favourite Trevor Sorbie iconic looks from the past 50 years were gorgeous. The big man himself was delighted. Bravo Bree, you rock.
