A collaboration between Charlotte Mensah (owner of the Hair Lounge Notting Hill, and our go-to for Afro hair gorgeousness) and photographer Lily Bertrand-Webb catches our eye. Images shot for web-tastic site Refinery29 UK, focus on the art of African hair threading and we’re intrigued. The art is a west African technique used as a protective style (an alternative to heat styling) where extra-strong cotton, wool, yarn or nylon is wrapped around sections of hair. The styles are properly three-dimensional and according to Charlotte are “ a combination of patterns etched on the scalp and threaded strands which are raised form the scalp.” The hair is stiff but pliable hence can be coiled into bold shapes. We likey like!
